We get a lot of calls from our customers about speed related issues. Because the speed of ADSL services are not guaranteed and it's a contended service these can be very difficult to deal with. Certain activities can be slower at times due to shifting traffic demands on the MWEB network, even your ADSL line provided by Telkom is a contended service and can have performance dips that could be considered 'normal'.
This is not to say that all speed problems customers experience are 'normal' many of them do need to be investigated and followed up, but we need to make sure we all have the same understanding when we discuss speed problems and we need to agree on when 'slow' is 'too slow'.
With the experience that we've built up in dealing with these issues we've come to realize a few common factors that get in the way when discussing speed:
- Many people don't realize that ADSL is a contended service and they don't know how contention works
- Many people don't know why we shape network traffic and they don't know the difference between terms like shaping and throttling
- Many people don't really know what realistic speeds to expect from their ADSL line, or how to interpret the speedtest results.
Stick with use for the next few articles and we'll tell you everything there is to know about ADSL services when it comes to speed, contention, congestion and traffic management.
