Black Ops 2 GiB Pro-Am Tournament Results

This past weekend saw the culmination of all the training and planning of the teams in the GiB (Gamers in Beta) program. After two weeks of intense training under their respective coaches (which may or may not have involved being kept awake playing Black Ops 2 for 72 hours straight while listening to James Blunt), the teams were let loose to show off what they’d learnt in a single elimination tournament hosted at the MWEB Mcave.

The eight up-and-coming teams had spent the previous two weeks playing each other for their seeding position for the knockout phases. Liquid Gaming had finished relatively comfortably at the top of the ladder leaving them favourites going in to Saturday’s knockouts.

The round of eight (or the quarter final if you prefer) saw a few close matches, especially the game between 21cT Deathwalkers and Orion Gaming. Orion didn’t look to be anything but an underdog heading into the game, but after winning 250 to 120 in Hardpoint on Express, they came back down to earth when 21cT grabbed SnD 6-3. The back-and-forth continued until the fifth and deciding round which was SnD on Standoff. The match went down to the wire with Orion Gaming grabbing it 6-5, much to the delight of coach XtaZ_Eos.

The semi-finals saw the matches get even closer as the teams started to lift their game. At MWEB Mcave a few of the coaches were in attendance to watch and commentate on the teams they had kept under their wing for the past few weeks. In fact it appeared the connection between some of the teams and coaches had become such that a few of the coaches were – to quote a comment on the day - fretting like a Volvo-driving Call of Duty Mom.
The match of the semi-final was between Corrupt Minions and Liquid Gaming which also went the full five rounds. Corrupt Minions took it 3-2 in the end to send them into the finals. Orion Gaming and RA5 (Aimbots) meanwhile went four rounds with Orion Gaming continuing to show real fight and grabbed an exhilarating Hardpoint on Hijacked 150-138 to see them join Corrupt Minions.

With the finals looming and a few spectators watching their every move on the livestream, the two teams got off to an exciting start. Hardpoint on Standoff was a tight affair for the first half until Corrupt Minions pulled away and took it 250-190. Orion Gaming again fought back and evened things with a hard fought 6-5 win in SnD on Slums. They then shot ahead with a comprehensive 6-1 win in CTF on Express, but it was all tied up again when they lost on their Achilles’ heel mode Hardpoint. Cargo hosted the decider, which was SnD, and again, it was a tight affair with Orion Gaming coming from behind to grab the final mode – and the final – 6-4.

The program had its first winner, and hopefully its first success, with plans to do it all again. Comments have been taken on board and the program will be tweaked and improved. In the end, the program could not have been a success without the support of the community – both the team and the coaches – and will hopefully help the growth and betterment of the South African eSports and competitive scene.

We would love to hear the thoughts of those that participated in the program to find out what they thought worked or didn’t work, and what they feel can be done to improve the program. Please feel free to comment on the MWEB Gamezone Forums, or if you feel more comfortable talking privately, drop Zombie Dredd an email at dredd@zombiegamer.co.za

Thank you to these teams and their coaches.
