South Africa beaten by Germany, but through to quarter finals

On Wednesday, March 20, Team eSports South Africa tested their steel against German precision in the Battlefield 3 Clanbase XVI NationsCup. Our team did not walk away as the victors against the current ElectronicSports League (ESL) champions, but they are still in the Cup and will be playing in the quarter finals next.

I caught up with our team captain, Barry "Anthraxza" Louzada for a brief match report. You can also check out the match recordings.

Match overview

The match was played on Wednesday the 20th of March 2013 21:00 CET. We played Caspian Border and Seine Crossing. With Germany being the current ESL champs, we know that it was never going to be an easy game for us. Their air superiority has not been matched in Europe, and with our lack of experience on the maps (that they play every day), we were definitely going to struggle.

Map 1 Caspian Border: Germany wins 447/0

We played Caspian Border starting on their server. With our 250 pings,  we were just not able to match them, but we gave our all and managed to get a flag here and there. The guys really gave it their all and showed great commitment and courage to keep going at them.

Map 2 Seine Crossing: Germany wins 83/9

Seine was a lot better for us as we have a lot more experience on this map; we also played on our server and managed to take a round off of Germany winning by a very narrow 8 tickets. Germany made a good fight back and beat us on the second round by 83/0 tickets and thus winning the map on ticket count.

Germany beat South Africa with a final score of 530/9.

What is next for Team eSports South Africa?

Up until now it has really been a great learning experience for us in the team with everyone improving their personal game as well as our team work. The German team captain, “logix-pyo” helped us a lot with our game and their team gave us a lot of support. We now need to look towards the quarter finals where we will either take on France or Italy. Nothing is definite at the moment, so we will have to wait and see. The guys are pretty upbeat about making it into the playoffs, and we just want to take it one game at a time.

Closing thoughts

Everyone that is involved in the local competitive community knows the importance of exposing our teams to international competition.  We’ve all talked and dreamed about it, most saying that it will never happen. We’re just 3 months into 2013, and we’ve had exposure to numerous world class tournaments, with our teams giving great performances. Whether we win or lose, the experience gained is invaluable.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Mind Sports South Africa for their dedication to placing South African gamers on the international playing field. On behalf of the players, I thank MWEB for the support, infrastructure and mindset to partner with other organisations in order to make it as easy as possible for gamers to live out their eSports dreams.

Last but not least I want to thank each member in Team eSports South Africa. It takes discipline, commitment and passion to continue pushing oneself to compete at this level. We are proud of you. I also have to give a special shoutout to Mr Louzada, you are legend.

We will keep you up to date with our team’s progress in the quarter finals.
