Important May events for SA gamers

While a lot of focus appears to be on the upcoming Electronics & Gaming Expo scheduled for Cape Town at the end of the month, there are plenty of other events and eSports tournaments and other activities scheduled for the last two weekends of May, and the good news is that they’re happening almost all over the country.

First up, there’s the rather important matter of the 2015 MWEB GameZone Masters Series which features both Call of Duty Advanced Warfare on Xbox One and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on PC. Both titles feature a R10,000 cash prize pool and registrations for the two online qualifiers are now open. The Call of Duty registrations close this Friday, while CS: GO will close on 29 May, but why delay, get your team registered now via the links below.

Cold Fusion LAN

  • Date: 22-24 May 2015 
  • Time: From 5pm
  • Where: Laerskool Edleen, Kempton Park, Gauteng
  • Cost: R150 per person
  • Info: Cold Fusion is a monthly LAN event featuring numerous PC titles (Call of Duty, Dota 2 and more), which for the first time will be a weekend event, rather than their previous one-day LANs.

Kamimodo Fighting Tournament

  • Date: 22 May 2015 
  • Time: 6pm – 9pm
  • Where: Kamimodo E-Sports Cafe, 238 Main Road, Observatory, Western Cape
  • Cost: R20 per person (for UCT Genshiken members) or R30 per person (non-members)
  • Info: One of Cape Town’s eSports venues teams up with the UCT Genshiken Society and Cape Town Showdown to present all the virtual flying kicks and punches you could wish for with Mortal Kombat X and Injustice: Gods Among Us on the agenda.

Jukes Cosplay Competition

  • Date: 22 May 2015 
  • Time: From 8pm
  • Where: Jukes Club and Esports Lounge, Corner Hendrik Verwoed and Jakaranda Road, Pretoria, Gauteng
  • Cost: R20 per cosplayer
  • Info: Pretoria’s addition to the South Africa’s eSports venues will host a cosplay competition over two categories – gaming and comics/anime). There will be lucky draws and “no skits will be needed.”

MSSA Mpumulanga Provincial Championships

  • Time: From 9am
  • Where: HTS Witbank, Beyers Street, Emalahleni
  • Price: R60 per MSSA registered member
  • Info: The 14th edition of the Mpumulanga Provincial Championships will feature eSports (including CS, Call of Duty, FIFA and more), wargames and board games. Registrations have closed already, but “late entries will be accepted in exceptional circumstances.”

Mortal Kombat Cup Western Cape Qualifiers

  • Where: MCave at MWEB Offices, 100 Fairways Close, Parow, Western Cape
  • Cost: Free
  • Info: The Western Cape qualifier for the Mortal Kombat Cup will see 64 competitors battle for a spot in the Grand Final (scheduled for 6 June) where they will then fight for a even more prizes. The tournament is already fully booked, but spectator registration is still open.

Cape Town's first Electronics & Gaming Expo

  • Where: Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), 1 Lower Long Street, Cape Town, Western Cape
  • Price: R70 (Day Pass) | R150 (Weekend Pass)
  • Info: The first year of Cape Town’s gaming expo will feature gaming (duh…), eSports, tournaments cosplay, giveaways, exhibitors and more. There is plenty happening, and we’ve tried to keep you up-to-date with a number of recent articles, so head over to the following links and find out more about what will be happening over the weekend:

MidLAN

  • Date: 29 - 30 May 2015 
  • Time: From 7pm
  • Where: 180 Graham Road, Glen Austin, Midrand, Gauteng
  • Cost: R80 per person
  • Info: Probably the most traditional of the LAN events doing the rounds at the moment and “one final reckless weekend before exams hit a lot of us.” It’s a good old-fashioned bring your own event (including sleeping bags) and interested players can email midlan.info@gmail.com to register.

Mortal Kombat Cup 2nd Gauteng Qualifier

  • Date: 30 May 2015 
  • Time: From 9am
  • Where: Venue TBC, Gauteng
  • Cost: Free
  • Info: The second Gauteng qualifier for the Mortal Kombat Cup will see more competitors battle for a spot in the Grand Final . There does still appear to be some space available for competitors, who can register here.

Jukes Development LAN

  • Date: 30 May 2015 
  • Time: From 12pm
  • Where: Jukes Club and Esports Lounge, Corner Hendrik Verwoed and Jakaranda Road, Pretoria, Gauteng
  • Price: R50 or R150 per player
  • Info: Jukes will be hosting a PC LAN to focus on developing the eSports players of the future by hosting a bring your own event mainly focused on under 18 players.
