Microsoft and Sony win at 66th Emmy Awards

The prestigious Emmy Awards are not only about the achievements of actors, but also about acknowledging extraordinary achievements in Technology and Engineering. At this year's 66th Emmy Awards, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded Microsoft the Emmy for "Television Enhancement Devices."

The Emmy acknowledges the Xbox One as the "industry-leading television-on-demand" with superior "media center capabilities." Some of the Xbox One features that landed Microsoft the Emmy is the recently announced Sling TV, and a wide selection of cutting-edge media apps. Other companies, that walked away with the "Television Enhancement Devices" Emmy, include Apple, Roku, Sony, and TiVo.

Sony's president and CEO Kazuo Hirai received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his "successful stewardship of Sony's PlayStation business." Hirai began his career at Sony in 1984 in the marketing department for Sony Music in Japan. In August 1995 he joined the computer and entertainment division. A lot of the PlayStation's success can be contributed to his leadership.  If there's one thing where the Xbox One is trailing far behind the PlayStation 4, then it's sales numbers. At CES 2015 Hirai announced that PlayStation 4 sales are now at 18.5 million units worldwide. Major Nelson from Xbox acknowledged the tremendous achievement of Sony with a very cool tweet:

2015 is going to be a very exciting year for both consoles. The PlayStation 4 is surpassing the Xbox One in sales and sheer power, but as the Emmy award shows, the Xbox One has its own aces. Congratulations to Microsoft for snatching that Emmy and to Sony's for Hirai for an award so well deserved.

What do you think the next frontier will be? Perhaps Virtual Reality? At least you know there will be lots and lots of games coming to your platform of choice very soon.
