MWEB GameZone to host the MSI Beat IT Southern African Qualifiers

Last month MSI announced their global Dota 2 tournament, Beat IT, and in their press release they announced the addition of African qualifiers which put a smile on all our faces. The question on everyone's mind, of course, was who will host this qualifier? After rumours and speculation I’m here to confirm that MWEB GameZone will be hosting the MSI Beat IT qualifiers for Southern Africa bringing a new style of tournament and production to South African Dota 2.

Africa’s inclusion, more specifically South Africa, comes as no surprise as our community continues to explode.

How will the tournament work?

The format will be a simple 32 team group stage to round of 16 double elimination bracket, but with a twist. The decision was made to invite our top 8 Southern African teams, 6 from South Africa and 2 from Namibia, who will be seeded into the round of 16. The teams chosen will be based on their performance throughout the year in various South African tournaments and leagues as well federation teams from both South Africa and Namibia.

The 32 teams who sign up for the qualifiers will be placed into 8 groups of 4 in best of 2 group stage qualifiers. The top team in each group will then go forward to the round of 16 to compete against the invited teams.

Since this is the Southern African qualifiers we will be pitching our top 4 from the round of 16 to take on Northern Africa’s best 4 to determine which team will get that invite to Taiwan to take on the world’s best on LAN and represent the continent in the finals. The games versus North Africa teams will be played as one game on South Africa, one game on Europe West and the third game, if necessary, will be a coin toss.

Registrations will open on Wednesday the 16th of July and the first 32 teams to sign up will be randomly placed into the 8 groups. More details will follow next week regarding where registrations will take place. Be sure to follow MWEB GameZone on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
