Gabe Newell & JJ Abrams to work on Movie?

Along with all the other things happening at this years D.I.C.E. Summit being held in Las Vegas, it seems that the end of the world is being plotted by two stalwarts attending this year – J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell.

“What we’re actually doing here,” Newell said at the “View to Next Steps” talk’s conclusion, “is recapitulating a series of conversations that have been going on [between Abrams and I]. This is what happens when game and movie people get together. And we sort of reached the point where we decided that we needed to do more than talk. So we’re gonna try and figure out if we can make a Portal movie or a Half-Life movie together.”

This came out at the conclusion of the Wednesday keynote speech by both Abrams and Newell. Newell will be honored at the upcoming 16th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards on the evening of February 7th as the 2013 AIAS Hall of Fame inductee.  Infocom co-founders  Dave Lebling and Marc Blank will be the evening’s Pioneer Award recipients.

Abrams also added, “…we have a game idea we’d like to work with Valve on.”

Gabe Newell, as founder of Valve Software and Steam, hardly needs introduction, but just in case, some of his and his company’s game titles include the Half-Life series, the Portal series, Dota 2, the Counter-Strike series, and others. Newell is also noted for his vociferous commentary on Microsoft’s new App Store on Windows 8.

JJ Abrams, on the other hand, also does include some very interesting pedigree, including producing films and television series such as “Cloverfield,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” ABC’s “Lost,” Fox’s “Fringe,” and CBS’s “Person of Interest.” In 1998, Abrams co-created his first television series, “Felicity;” he then created and executive produced “Alias” in 2001, and co-created and executive produced “Lost” in 2004. In 2006, Abrams directed his first feature film, “Mission: Impossible 3,” followed by 2009’s “Star Trek” and 2011’s “Super 8,” which he also wrote. His most recent feature, “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” will debut this May.
