Like previous instalments, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a strong single-player experience focused on exploration and adventure. It also has a multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, and last night Rockstar announced the first details.

Red Dead Online Beta Details

"Using the gameplay of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 as a foundation, Red Dead Online will be ready to be explored alone or with friends, and will also feature constant updates and adjustments to grow and evolve this experience for all players," announces Rockstar.

Rockstar also announced a beta phase for Red Dead Online. The base game releases on October 26 and the public beta kicks off in November.

The online component is available for free to anyone who owns Red Dead Redemption 2. It combines the signature Red Dead storytelling with cooperative and competitive gameplay. You can play it alone or with friends.

What to expect from Red Dead Online

IGN interviewed Rockstar Director of Design, Imran Sarwar about what players can expect from the online experience.

"Red Dead Online will use the world and gameplay mechanics of Red Dead Redemption 2 as a jumping off point for a new world of cowboys (and cowgirls) and outlaws that combines multiplayer and cooperative gameplay and narrative components in a huge open world."

According to Sarwar, you can easily explore the open world alone or with friends. You can work together as a team to complete goals, or you can compete against each other.

"We'll take full advantage of the entire world, as well as all the aspects of a 19th century setting that make Red Dead Redemption 2 unique and fun," continues Sarwar.

Red Dead Online will include components from Rockstar's hugely successful Grand Theft Auto Online. Meaning, it will be fun, include a strong narrative, with complex co-op and competitive systems. The biggest difference between the two games is the pace. Grand Theft Auto Online is a fast game with speeding vehicles, whereas Red Dead Online focuses more on exploration. It is this aspect that makes the experience "more intimate."

Rockstar will continue to support Grand Theft Auto Online with content updates. They plan to stack updates between the two online experiences for players to easily switch between playing one or the other and not miss out on new content.
