The Call of Duty 4: Blackout beta kicked off last night on PS4, and so far, feedback from critics around the world is very positive. We participated in the previous multiplayer beta and thought it laid a solid foundation for what promises to be a great Call of Duty instalment for this year. (Unlike Battlefield V's open beta that has a tonne of issues to sort out before launch day).

“The development effort behind Blackout has been an extraordinary undertaking and we couldn’t be more proud for what the team has accomplished,” said Mark Gordon, Co-Studio Head of Treyarch. “It’s awesome to watch how making Blackout has engaged the whole team in ways that we have never seen before. We couldn’t be more excited to bring the vast heritage of Black Ops heritage to life in Blackout, and can’t wait for the community to share their feedback as we head to launch.”

Black Ops 4 Blackout beta - Important Info

“The Blackout Beta is just the beginning of a long journey that we plan to take with our fans,” said Dan Bunting, Co-Studio Head, Treyarch. “We are going to support Blackout for the long haul, and there’s such a rich history with Black Ops that allows us to continuously update and evolve Blackout to keep it fun and fresh for the community.

It’s a true celebration of Black Ops in every way, and getting our community in to play the mode before launch is vital. We can’t wait to see the feedback and hear from players as they get a taste of what’s coming in October.”

Xbox One players will be able to jump into the beta on September 14. PC players can also join the beta on September 14 if they have an Early Access pass, otherwise on September 15. The beta ends for all participants on September 17. The beta opens at 7 pm SAST for all platforms.

You can play Blackout solo, in a squad of two or three. There are vehicles in the Blackout beta, but keep in mind that you cannot drive and shoot, so it would be better to at least have one teammate. As with other battle royale games, you'll find valuable gear inside buildings, so search for these the moment your boots hit the ground. Just keep in mind that you can only carry a limited amount of gear.

Perks work differently in Blackout than in Call of Duty multiplayer. These are also scattered around the map, and you'll have to select when you want to activate it. Once activated, it runs on a timer, and the different perks all have their own time period that they can run. Most of the perk benefits are the same as multiplayer, with a few extra added specifically for Blackout.

Stimulant raises your max health by 100, while with Medic you can heal yourself and your allies faster, and when you revive a teammate they regain more health. The Medic perk lasts for two minutes. The Consumer perk reduces all cast times by 20% and the Outlander reduces damage and gives you a speed boost that lasts two minutes.
