No esports at the Olympics due to violence in video games

The rise of esports is undoubtedly massive and there is no better example than The International 2018 which saw teams fight it out in front of a massive crowd with a mind-blowing $25.4 million at stake. There are those who want esports to be seen as a real, legitimate sport, but one event remains ever elusive, and that’s the Olympics.

For those who want nothing more than to see esports at the Olympics, I’ve got some bad news for you. Unless games drastically change, it looks like there is little to no chance of us seeing esports at the Olympics any time soon. During the 2018 Asian Games, the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, explained that it is due to violence in video games, as reported by Associated Press.

Mr Bach explained the situation, stating that:

We cannot have in the Olympic program a game which is promoting violence or discrimination. They, from our point of view, are contradictory to the Olympic values and cannot, therefore, be accepted."

But weren’t most real sports born out of some kind of human conflict and violence? Mr Bach addressed this, noting the following:

"Of course every combat sport has its origins in a real fight among people. But sport is the civilised expression of this. If you have egames where it's about killing somebody, this cannot be brought into line with our Olympic values."

That’s quite an unfortunate stance from Mr Bach as it basically disqualifies all the top esports games in the world at the moment, from League of Legends to Dota 2, Counter-Strike and many others. However, there are some non-violent games out there, such as FIFA and Rocket League.

The latter might not even make the cut as this could be considered vehicular violence, couldn’t it? If FIFA is considered to be a viable esports title for the Olympics, that wouldn’t mean much in my opinion, because we already have real soccer at the Olympics anyway.

What is your take on all of this and which esports titles do you want to see in the Olympics one day? Let us know in the comment section below.
