The PlayStation 5's possible codename spotted in Unreal Engine 4 update

There have been quite a few rumours about Sony’s next-gen console, the PlayStation 5, floating around even before E3 kicked off. Sony didn’t reveal any new hardware at E3 this year but even so many (including myself) suspects the PS5 will release sometime in early 2020. Even back in March, it was reported that dev kits have already been shipped out and that does make sense as developers obviously need a lot of time to create games and get used to the new hardware.

Upcoming PlayStation hardware normally gets codenames, for example, the PS4 Pro had the codename “Neo” while the PlayStation VR’s codename was “Morpheus” and the PS4 had the codename “Orbis”. Looks like Sony loves using names from Greek Mythology as their codenames. Now it seems we might finally have the codename for the PS5 according to an eagle-eyed user named Gemüsepizza over on ResetEra.

The PS5’s codename is very likely “Erebus” but keep in mind that you should always take information like this with a grain of salt until such time as Sony officially starts mentioning the name Erebus. In the latest version of Unreal Engine 4, a new Operating System popped up called Erebus, as you can see in the image below.

The image has a tag “TST2” and we have absolutely no idea what that means so far, but it might be a way to hide the Erebus name from people searching for something. The next image shows Erebus side-by-side with the PS4 and Xbox One.

This image shows the engine checking if a game supports the crossplay feature between consoles as well as PC and the “bPS4SeenOtherConsole” also highly suggest that due to Erebus being listed here, it is definitely a console.

Erebus is a deity in Greek Mythology, often referred to as “deepest darkness” or “shadow”. identifies him as one of the first five beings in existence, born of Chaos. So, what you may ask? Well, Hesiod, a Greek poet from roughly the same time as Homer, identifies Erebus as “one of the first five beings in existence”. From these five, Erebus is apparently the last to be born, according to Hesiod’s Theogony.

I, for one, do think that this is indeed the codename for the PS5 but we will just have to wait and see if Sony says anything or if gamers can discover more information about the next-gen console.

Do you think that Erebus is the actual codename for the PS5? Let us know in the comment section below.
