GeForce RTX 2080 officially teased, including reveal date and GPU architecture

Normally, NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, would just walk unto a stage somewhere with a new graphics card in his hand, announce the thing and then proceed to talk about a free lunch that people attending will get with some kind of green colouring inside.

This time, however, NVIDIA is teasing the reveal of the next-gen GeForce cards with a short video (view at the bottom of this article), with hints inside that basically confirm a reveal at Gamescom 2018 later this month. The video by NVIDIA entitled “Be For The Game” hints at “before Gamescom” and trust me, this will all make more sense as to why I am certain that’s what the title of the video actually hints at.

Gamescom kicks off on 21 August 2018 and in the video, rolling numbers appear in the order of 2,0,8,0, which is 20 August. Thanks to some eagle-eyed users on Reddit, multiple texts and nicknames indicate that the next-gen Geforce flagship card will be called the GeForce RTX 2080. Yes, that’s a big change from what we expected and from the familiar GTX range, but there is no doubt in my mind that this is the case.

Check out some nicknames and text that appear in the video as well as what users think it means, then you will probably be as convinced as I am.

  • RoyTeX - RTX
  • Not_11 - Not 11-Series
  • Mac-20 - 20 Series
  • Eight-Tee - 80
  • AlanaT - Alan Turing
  • Zenith20 - 20 series
  • Ray - Raytracing
  • give me 20 - 20 series
  • 50.968495,7.014026 – GPS coordinates

Those last GPS coordinates reportedly point to Cologne, Germany. That’s the same city Gamescom takes place in and the long-rumoured use of the Turing architecture has also been all-but-confirmed with the nickname AlanaT, which if you think about it can stand for Alan Turing. If you didn’t know is basically the father of modern computing and a brilliant mathematician who the GPU architecture is named after.

Check out the video tease by NVIDIA below and then tell us if you are excited about the next-generation GeForce cards in the comments section.
