EA cancels the Origin 'On the House' free games service

One of the best features of EA's Origin Access was the "On the House" free games service. A few days ago, EA sneaked in a change - they completely removed the "On the House" page from Origin and it now redirects to the Origin Access subscription page. EA did not announce the change in a formal press release, but an EA spokesperson replied to Polygon's questions via an email.

"Origin On the House has been retired and games will no longer be offered through the program," explains the email. "This change won’t affect any games players downloaded from the service prior to that date — those are theirs to keep forever."

What is interesting, is that Origin Access Premier will launch on Monday, in time for the upcoming FIFA 19 and other EA games. The subscription service for PC offers one monthly fee for all upcoming EA games. Subscribers get five days early access to the complete game before its street date, as well as access to all Vault games. It's a fantastic service and you should consider becoming a subscriber if you are at all interested in playing any of the upcoming EA titles.

Origin's On the House service will be missed. It offered over 30 games to download and keep forever, including hits like Theme Hospital, Battlefield 3, Dragon Age: Origins, and lots more. The service also released more than ten DLCs for free, which were mostly expansions for the Battlefield series.

The very first game that released via On the House was Dead Space in October 2008. The service almost ran for a full decade, and it was a very cool gesture from a company that knows that gamers do not like them.

At least we still have Steam, Humble Bundle and that offer free games every now and then.
