15 missing games at E3 2018 we totally thought we would be there

E3 2018 Missing Games.jpg

The list of games we saw at E3 2018 is huge. We put together a complete guide with release dates and platforms which you can find here. However, E3 2018 also had its list of missing games, ones which we totally thought would be there but were not. Now that I have had time to sit back and look at the week as a whole, these games came to mind and I cannot help but wonder where they were. After being announced or leaked, they were no-shows and when we will see them again is still a mystery.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

Of course, there is no E3 list without Final Fantasy 7 Remake making the top spot as it feels like it has been decades since we have last seen the game. Originally announced at E3 2015, the game has been talked about here and there with the game director, Tetsuya Nomura mentioning that it was revealed way too early and the development focus shifting to Kingdom Hearts III. E3 2018 came and went without any sign of the game.

We know Sony has a big stake in the upcoming project so when the PlayStation media briefing ended and there was no Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we knew it was going to be another year without seeing it again. This all could be due to Square Enix's push for Kingdom Hearts III and seen as it releases on 29 January 2019, E3 2019 could be the event for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Avengers Project

We know the team at Crystal Dynamics are hard at work on an ambitious Avengers game that is said to be one of the greatest superhero video games of this generation. Well, we wish we could say more as it has been a year and a half since we saw the teaser trailer and we have not seen or heard about the game since. We literally know nothing about it apart from it being made by Crystal Dynamics. Will it be an MMO or RPG? Who knows? Until E3 next year we will have to just hope it pops up somewhere. Perhaps Gamescom?

Sony put a heavy focus on their big four exclusives at E3 this year. Spider-Man, Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima but let us not forget that they actually have a lot more hidden away and one of those games is WiLD. Initially revealed back in 2015, the game has been missing since then. The first reveal showed off much of the game's world, gameplay and story which led us to believe that it was pretty far in development. That was clearly not the case as another E3 has gone by and it is nowhere to be seen. We all thought this could be the year that we see it and Sony stamps another PS4 exclusive with the "awesome stamp of approval" but alas nothing.

Deep Down

About those other PS4 exclusives, Deep Down is yet another one we have not seen from since its first debut. To think Deep Down was announced all the way back in 2013 when Sony first showcased the PS4. This Dark Souls-like dungeon crawler took everyone's attention as it looked fantastic and was announced as a free-to-play game. Back in the day, we did not know Dark Souls III was a thing so this would have been the perfect replacement for it. Now, however, I feel as if the hype around the game has died. E3 2018 was Deep Down-less making us wonder if the game is even still happening.

Bayonetta 3

While the Bayonetta series was first on PS3 and Xbox 360, it has not built itself around being Nintendo exclusive and we love it for that.  Bayonetta 2 was a huge hit and Platinum Games announcing a sequel came as no surprise. However, Nintendo left it in the dark at E3 this year as we did not see a trailer or even a poster of the game anywhere. Nintendo did not have the best lineup at the show compared to last year so to leave this at home was a questionable decision. Perhaps it is too early to show it to the world or maybe Nintendo has another plan for it. Regardless, it was a no-show at E3 2018.

Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2. There is not much I can say about the game as there is not much we know. First announced back in 2013, the game has been sleeping in an unmarked grave ever since its announcement. We know nothing and we have seen nothing since. The fact that Techland announced Dying Light 2 making it the second game to release in the span of Dead Island 2's announcement goes to show that maybe the game is actually dead. If it will ever rise from the grave and walk the earth is yet to be seen but E3 2018, even though it played host to a few zombie games, was Dead Island 2 free.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar is not one to flaunt their games and if history shows anything is that they stay away from big shows like E3 and Gamescom. So it goes without saying that Red Dead Redemption 2 was not at E3 2018. Sure, Take-Two publishing was there but they were the only stand to have no games playable as it was just filled with meeting rooms and chill lounges. Call it arrogance if you want but Red Dead Redemption 2 does not need a trade show to sell copies.

Borderlands 3

Yes, I am aware that Borderlands 3 was confirmed to be not at E3 2018 but I was still hoping for that sneaky surprise reveal. After the Walmart leak showed off so many games that were announced, Borderlands 3 being on that list just made me believe that it could actually happen apart from the director himself confirming it was a no-show. I will not give up hope though as I am sure we will see it sooner than we think.

Metroid Prime 4

When you reveal a game at E3 that steals the show usually you would follow up with that a year later with something like gameplay or even another trailer. Well, Nintendo does not think so. Metroid Prime 4 has not been seen or heard from since its reveal back at E3 2017 and this year's E3 was no different. No game, no trailer and no anything. It makes you wonder if Nintendo announced it a little too early.

So THQ Nordic decided to stay home and not attend E3 2018 due to the FIFA World Cup. While they thought it was a good idea, surely it cannot be healthy for your game exposure can it? Biomutant was one that suffered from zero exposure at E3 2018 because it was missing completely. THQ Nordic was not as the show at all which meant no Biomutant. While we have seen the game in action, we still know very little about it and we will have to wait even longer now to see it because soccer took preference over the business.

Other notable mentions

  • Darksiders 3 (because of soccer)
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Shenmue 3
  • Pokemon 2019
  • Splinter Cell (Seriously where is this now?)

Which of these games did you totally think would be at E3 2018? Let us know in the comments below.
