Anthem: Romance options could be in the cards if players want it

I’m not a big fan of meeting NPCs and getting into the swing of things (if you know what I mean) simply because most of the time, things like that aren’t done too well at all. BioWare is one of the few developers that do deliver some great romance options from time to time, which is why some fans have been a bit upset due to the lack of romance in Anthem.

BioWare has been saying that there will initially be no options in their upcoming game Anthem and since the game is more of a co-op experience and less like their previous games Mass Effect and Dragon Age, it makes a lot of sense not to include relationship or romance options with NPCs.

Even so, it looks like if fans really, really want it, BioWare might consider adding romance and relationship options to the game. At E3 this year, BioWare’s General Manager, Casey Hudson, was asked by VentureBeat about the fact that some people seem to want romance options in Anthem.

Mr Hudson replied by stating that:

I think the expectations from a BioWare game- Mass Effect and Dragon Age, they’re quite mature-rated storylines, things like that. That was one framework for what romances were in a BioWare game. So then the question is, are there going to be romances in Anthem? We’ve been saying no, but -the nuance is, of course we do want relationships. It’s just more in an action genre of storytelling. Of course, like with other games, we just want to see how people respond to that, and then we can build more.

You might remember, with Mass Effect, Garrus was an alien that, as we developed the story - he was a kind of birdlike concept art that we eventually pulled together and shipped that game. But we didn’t know what he would really be like and what the reaction would be. It turned out that people loved Garrus so much that they wanted romances with him, so we built that into Mass Effect 2 and people loved it. That same opportunity exists here. If people really like a character and they want to spend more time with them, want a relationship with them, that’s definitely in the cards for the future.” - Source

It's good that BioWare wants to listen to the fans and maybe they will add romance or relationship options to the game after it launches. Even if that tickles your fancy, I just hope that these things don’t seem forced or out of place, as so many games have done in the past.
