From Software's Déraciné gets first details and eerie screenshots

When you hear the name From Software, I’m sure Dark Souls or Bloodborne comes to mind, but From Software is more than just a developer that creates brutally difficult games. This was very evident during Sony’s E3 Press Conference post-show, where a surprise announcement was made.

The reveal of From Software’s new game, Déraciné, was short and sweet, but we know that the game will be releasing exclusively on PS VR this year. With the renowned From Software in collaboration with Japan Studios creating this strange and eerie new PS VR experience, there is now one more reason to get PS VR.

The game plays off in a secluded boarding school and players will experience it all through the eyes of a spirit summoned by a young girl, as they are tasked to prove their existence and even build unique bonds with students of said boarding school through clever interactions.

You will be playing as a spirit and try to communicate with characters, but there’s more to it than that. The game features a mysterious story and as a spirit, you will have to “manipulate the forces of life and time to change the fate of the pupils”. What this means exactly is still unclear, but I suspect something deeper and darker is going on and that the students (and possibly teachers) you meet might be in life-threatening danger.

Why was the spirit summoned in the first place? A lot of questions remain unanswered for now and that’s obviously part of the intrigue of the game.

As you can see from the end of the trailer, a dead flower comes back to life through action by the player. If you will have these types of powers from the start or attain them throughout the story is still unclear as well, but the possibilities for this type of mechanic is definitely vast.

According to some early reports, something like a flower can be brought back to life by finding another plant and leaching from its life force, then using a golden pocket watch to bring the flower back to life. Does this mean that at some point during the game we might see this used on characters, where you have to leach the life of one to bring back another? At the moment, we aren’t sure.

Hidetaka Miyazaki talks about the new PS VR project:

This title got its start when I asked myself whether I could recreate the classic adventure game with its relaxed pace in virtual reality, giving users an entirely unique experience. SIE was interested, and I am very grateful to have them as a partner as we develop this game together.

The result is that the concept behind the title has changed little since those initial thoughts, and Déraciné has a warm, peculiar feel to it that is completely different from anything we have done before. I’d love for as many users as possible to give it a try.”

Check out the first eerie screenshots of Déraciné below. Keep in mind that these images have been reformatted for non-VR displays.
