Cyberpunk 2077 gets first details and screenshots from CDPR

Cyberpunk 2077 was at the top of my list for most anticipated games of E3 2018. A few days ago we saw that sexy trailer, and last night CD Projekt Red shared a bit more information about the game. One of the most important details for me is that Cyberpunk 2077 will be in a first-person perspective, unlike the Witcher series that are all from a third-person perspective.

We already know that Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, narrative-driven role-playing game set in the universe of the classic pen & paper RPG system — Cyberpunk 2020. We also know that legendary Mike Pondsmith works with CDPR as the designer behind Cyberpunk 2077.

The character we saw in the trailer is the main protagonist, who is simply called "V." Cyberpunk 2077 will feature a "robust" customization system, for example, you'll be able to select V's gender, visual appearance, character class, and historical background. According to the press release, your character customization choices "may influence the shape of the game."

Below are two examples of possible V characters.

CDPR fans will be happy to know that Cyberpunk 2077 will include the studio's hallmark "choice and consequence" game mechanics. It is one of the core strengths of all CDPR games, and it will be an even stronger focus in Cyberpunk 2077. The choices you make will "ripple through the entire game."

V is a hired gun called a cyberpunk, and it sounds like a lot of the game will play off in a place called "Night City" or it will at least be an important starting point for V. "The game follows the story of V — a hired gun on the rise in Night City, the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future," explains CDPR. "With dozens of hours of main story arc quests, and many more of additional activities, there’s always something to see and do in Night City. Players will experience all of it entirely through V’s eyes, with an interactive dialogue system that gives them greater narrative agency."

CDPR Community Lead, Marcin Momot, took to Twitter to explain why they decided to go with a first-person-perspective for Cyberpunk 2077. "Immersion, first and foremost. We believe that the story we want to tell in this RPG will be a lot more immersive that way. There will be opportunities to see your character like mirrors, inventory screen or key cutscenes."

I am delighted about that FPP decision as yes, I feel that it adds to immersion in a video game. According to Mormot, CDPR is working on something very special regarding the game's dialogue. "The team is actually working on some huge things in regards to the way dialogue works in the game," continues Mormot.

V is only one of many Cyberpunks that roam the streets of Night City. These cyber-enhanced street warriors are tech-savvy netrunners, corporate life-hackers and for hire. You need to make your mark in this dark underworld. True to the cyberpunk theme, MegaCorps controls every aspect of life in Night City. According to some of the screenshots (and the trailer), it looks like vehicles might be a big feature in the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but we still have no release date.
