Battlefield V - DICE reveals the mystery behind the name

Why is 2018's Battlefield game not called Battlefield: World War II, but Battlefield V? DICE revealed the reason behind the name, and it is pretty cool if you ask me.

"✌️ represents “V for Victory”. The phrase and sign were popularized by Winston Churchill and used amongst the allies for much of WWII. It’s also why we chose to use the Roman numeral V instead of the number 5 for the title," explains DICE via Twitter.

Some interesting things to note about the V sign. When the palm faces inward, it has entirely different, and offensive meaning. Winston Churchill at first didn't know the difference between the two V signs, and often used the offensive sign with his palm facing inwards. He later used the V for Victory sign with his palm facing outward, and it became very popular, so much so that other leaders of the Allied force began using it, and it also had an official use in military correspondence. Churchill first used the sign on 19 July 1941 when he launched the "V for Victory" campaign.

Churchill said in his speech; “The V sign is the symbol of the unconquerable will of the occupied territories and a portent of the fate awaiting Nazi tyranny. So long as the peoples continue to refuse all collaboration with the invader, it is sure that his cause will perish and that Europe will be liberated.” Churchill made the sign popular, but it was, however, first introduced by Victor de Laveleye, a Belgian politician (January 1941). de Laveleye suggested in a radio broadcast that people use it when surrounded by foes as a sign to their enemies that they're capturing people who are in fact, expecting the downfall of their enemy. He was speaking to people of the Low Counties who was being invaded by German forces. These countries were Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and France, and the "V" was the first letter of the word for victory in French (victoire), and freedom in Dutch (vrijheid).

The "V for Victory" sign was considered to be the most successful propaganda campaign in world history. On the Axis side, Germany was, of course, furious over the success of the campaign, as "V" is also the first letter of the word for "victory" (Viktoria)  in German.

Battlefield V releases worldwide on October 19 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out your South African price list as well as all the pre-order details.
