Epic is throwing over R1.2 billion into Fortnite Battle Royale esports prize pools

Epic Games has just blown my mind completely and I am now pondering over which players I want to approach to create a Fortnite team. In an unprecedented announcement, Epic Games have revealed that they will be pumping $100 million into Fortnite Battle Royale’s 2018/2019 competitive season prize pools.

At the current Dollar to Rand conversion rate, that’s over R1.2 billion (R1,255,800,000.00) to be exact. That’s esports history in the making right there. As you can see from the announcement below, details about how this collective prize pool will be split into are still unknown.

Grab your gear, drop in and start training. Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale we’ve watched the passion for community competition grow and can’t wait to empower you to battle with the best. In the 2018 - 2019 season, Epic Games will provide $100,000,000 to fund prize pools for Fortnite competitions.

We’re getting behind competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different - we plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game.” - Source

Epic didn’t share any specific deals and schedule for what I imagine to be a large number of tournaments, nor did they share details on which platforms will be eligible. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long as Epic notes they will share more details in the coming weeks.

The current record for the biggest single tournament prize pool in esports history is $24,787,916 when Dota 2’s The International 2017 broke records last year. If Epic takes less than a third of that big $100 million number and pumps it into a Fortnite World Championship, records will be shattered. Let that sink in for a moment. It has, honestly, blown my mind and if anyone has ever doubted Epic Games’ commitment to esports and Fortnite’s Battle Royale, then I am sure they have changed their mind right now.

What do you think about this announcement and have you started calling your friends to create a Fortnite team already? Let us know in the comment section below.
