The 7 most memorable video game quotes of all time

Video game quotes.jpg

Sometimes a character in a video game just says something so profound, scary or even hilarious that you will never forget it. We all love playing video games and I’m sure there have been some quotes that have stuck with you throughout the years. Today, I want to hear from our readers about those unforgettable quotes and share my top seven with you, so here they are.

Please note that the quotes are sorted in no particular order because there was just no way I could decide which one should be number one.

Stay awhile and listen

Who can ever forget Deckard Cain, the last of the Horadrim and without a doubt the most memorable character in the Diablo franchise? You have to remember that in the original Diablo, Cain could identify items for you, so you would constantly be going back to Tristram to see if you picked up an awesome item.

Every time I would go identify items at Cain (which is probably in the thousands), he would say “Stay awhile and listen” and honestly, I wanted to stay awhile and listen to the wisdom he processed, and of course get all my items identified. Deckard Cain was the staple of the Diablo franchise until he was unexpectedly killed off during the opening hours of Diablo III.

At least he is now in Heroes of the Storm, with one of his abilities named after the famous quote. Even so, it was one of the only times I actually wanted to cry when playing a video game and his quote is arguably one of the most memorable in video game history.

The right man in the wrong place

It was very difficult for me to pick just one quote from the famous Half-Life franchise but I just had to settle with the mysterious G-Man’s quote at the start of Half-Life 2 speaking to Gordon Freeman:

The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference…in the world

Since Gordon Freeman is the silent protagonist we all know and love, so G-Man was the character that really had the profound saying in the franchise. G-Man appears in every entry into the Half-Life franchise, even Opposing Forces, and he is one of the most enigmatic and mysterious video game characters ever.

He was obviously referring to Gordon Freeman as the right man in the wrong place and for all the good Mr Freeman is done on his own, I can’t help but feel like G-Man pulled his strings all along and is the puppet master from the incident at Black Mesa to the ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

Your heart will explode

Back in Vanilla World of Warcraft, there was this raid called AQ40, which only the most hardcore of players got to experience. At the end of the raid, the main boss, one of the five Old Gods, resided. Its name was C'Thun, and it delivered one of the most bone-chilling lines I have ever heard, stating in a creepy voice that “Your heart will explode”.

What made C’Thun’s quote even more devastating was that the boss was unkillable until Blizzard fixed him, and he was known to some guilds as the Guild Breaker. Many guilds dissolved into nothingness after attempting to take down C’Thun, even after he was patched and to this day is remembered as one of the most iconic fights in WoW by those who had the opportunity to fight him.

But our princess is in another castle

You might have heard about Super Mario Bros. released by Nintendo in 1985 for the NES. Just kidding, everyone and their cat knows who Mario is and where he came from, but can you remember this little gem?

Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another Castle!

That’s one of the first video game quotes I remember and it is without a doubt a classic. You see, in the original game, the final stage of almost every World in Super Mario Bros. took place in a castle and when Mario gets through the castle and defeats all of Bowser’s minions and thinks he might finally rescue Princess Peach Toadstool, he is met with this message from Toad.

The quote became so famous that John Darnielle from Mountain Goats and Kaki King wrote a song about it in 2008, which you can check out below.

Took an arrow to the knee

I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.

Do I even need to say anything more than that before everyone who is reading this will scream Skyrim? Well, I probably should, as this quote went completely viral after Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. For those who don’t know, guards in Skyrim had just a few selected lines they could utter and there are probably thousands of them throughout the vast open-world game.

When you engaged in conversation with a guard, no matter which city or town you were in, they would respond with this gem, reminiscing about the past and what could have been. Check out the fantastic music video by Johnny "WLB" Medlar about the famous video game quote below.

Didn’t we have some fun though?

Throughout both Portal games, GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System) has been a staple throwing out quote after quote and I have to say, most of them were very memorable. Picking just one, however, I went with a quote from the original Portal which stayed with me as I was figuring out all the puzzles in the Aperture Science Enrichment Centre. Close to the end of the game as GLaDOS became less funny and more serious, the AI uttered this little gem:

"Didn't we have some fun, though? Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I said ‘Goodbye’, and you were like, ‘No way!’ And then I was all, ‘We pretended we were going to murder you'?. That was great. Is anyone there?

I couldn’t help but smile when hearing this as it took me quite a while to figure out all the levels leading up to the Maintenance Areas and there was this feeling of desperation in GLaDOS that I just couldn’t shake. Now all I want to do is play Portal again or create a seminar where I teach Gabe Newell to count to 3. Check out all the GLaDOS quotes including my favourite pick (at roughly 26 minutes) in the comprehensive video by Diegotheartist1 below.

All your base are belong to us

You’ve probably all seen “All your base are belong to us” or some form of this quote in memes on the internet or even other types of media throughout the years, but do you know where it all started? The phrase actually originated from the opening cutscene of a game called Zero Wing’s English port all the way back in 1992.

This poor translation rose to fame and spread across the internet like wildfire. The first time I personally heard it was during a 2 vs 2 StarCraft: Brood War match when my opponents threw this gem at me at the start of the match, probably in jest or maybe even to intimate opponents in some way.

Check out an explanation about the origin of the meme and how this famous video game quote grew into such an internet sensation by KnowYourMeme below.

There are many, many other video game quotes and the ones I picked for this opinion are just the most memorable for me. With that in mind, what are the most memorable quotes from video game characters for you? Share your favourites with us in the comment section below.
