April 2018 Video Game Releases: What You Need to Know

Games of April 2018.jpg

April is all about the God of War; how he's changed, where he's going, and who is with him. April is also a little bit about The New Kid's visit to the Nintendo Switch. But mostly, April belongs to those who own a PlayStation 4.

God of War

Release date:  20/04 WW

Platform: PS4 exclusive

Genre: Action-adventure

Mode: Single-player

Age Restriction: 17+ Mature

Rated for: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language

Description: We know the new God of War will be much longer than any of the previous instalments – about double the size. It will also differ from its predecessors in that this time, the whole game revolves around a deeply personal story; that of Kratos and his son. Atreus. Kratos will also face the Nordic gods and not the Greek gods, it will be single-player only, combat will also be different (camera changed to third-person, over the shoulder view, which brings combat a lot closer), and it will have role-playing elements.

Although Kratos’ main mission is to protect and train his son, the adventure is also a journey of self-discovery for him. He is less angry, and players will get to know a side to Kratos that has never surfaced in any of the previous games. He often reflects on his past and tries to be a good father to his son. Fans will be happy to know that the game will have enough action, but this time Kratos uses a magical battle axe called the Leviathan Axe (his blades were lost in God of War III). The axe shares similarities with Thor’s hammer e.g. Kratos can call it back after a ranged throw.

Atreus is a character in his own right, with unique abilities and move-sets to assist Kratos in battle - he can be called upon to use his bow and arrow to distract enemies during battle. Both Kratos and Atreus have a skill tree that significantly changes weapons, gear, and attack moves. Unlike in previous games (no more orbs), you develop your skill tree by upgrading weapons. Atreus can also translate runes and solve puzzles. You can visit blacksmiths to upgrade both their weapons with runes, or you can craft gear and develop your character tree in a much stronger role-playing mechanic than any previous God of War game. Because of the RPG element, Kratos will feel much more personal to the player than before.

Lastly, God of War won’t have any microtransactions, Cory Barlog, lead writer and director confirmed the news via Twitter. There is only in-game currency called hacksilver, which you collect from fallen enemies and chests. You use hacksilver to repair and upgrade armour.
