Dota 2: Valve introduces the Dota Plus subscription service

Every time a new Dota 2 Battle Pass was released, I got extremely excited for all the new things I could unlock and quite honestly, a new Battle Pass has gotten me back into the game again more than once. Now, out of nowhere, Valve has released the Dota Plus subscription service and they are calling it “an evolution of the Majors Battle Pass”.

It is an uninterrupted, ongoing service that is filled with features that “provide both progression and opportunities for improvement”. So normally, you would have one Battle Pass for the Majors and one for the annual The International, but things have changed this season with the Pro Circuit.

Valve notes that they have replaced the Majors Battle Pass with the Dota Plus subscription, so there will probably still be a The International 2018 Battle Pass / Compendium. With that being said, not everyone is happy with the subscription service and some fans are even calling it pay-to-win.

First off, let’s take a look at the price, where you have three options readily available to choose from and remember, you can also gift a Dota Plus subscription to a friend.

Dota Plus price:

  • Monthly Subscription: R56.50
  • 6-Month Subscription: R319 (5% discount)
  • Annual Subscription: R590 (12% discount)

If you subscribe to Dota plus, you will get a tonne of cool things, from the ability to level up heroes and unlock new badges, hero chat wheel options, quests to collect shards (which you can then use in a new store page to purchase cosmetic items), participate in hero specific challenges, unlock hero relics and more.

Subscribers will also get new seasonal terrain and free entry into the weekly Battle Cup which is now back in action. That all sounds fantastic and shouldn’t affect gameplay in the slightest, so what is all the fuss about then? Well, that’s where the Plus Assistant comes in.

Plus Assistant

One of the most difficult things for me when getting back into the game has always been catching up with the meta and learning about all the new tactics. It is a daunting task and I can just imagine how hard it must be for new players. The Plus Assistant will surely help those who have taken an extended break from the game or the new players, but it sounds a bit too powerful in my opinion.

You can item suggestions, ability suggestions, hero suggestions and even lane strategy as well as some other nifty things. These suggestions are generated from data which is gathered across millions of matches at each skill bracket, so having the Plus Assistant active against a team who does not might create an unfair advantage, especially in lower skill brackets. One team could get the best type of suggestions to beat their opponents, which abilities to level first and all that, while the other team could just wing it. It will be very interesting to see how Plus Assistant feature plays out and I will definitely be testing it later this week.

Read the Plus Assistant description below:

"The collective knowledge of the Dota community is vast, and every day, in millions of games played around the world, it grows. Now, with the help of Plus Assistant, that global repository of Dota knowhow can be brought to bear on every single game you play. Plus Assistant offers real-time item and ability suggestions - generated from data gathered across millions of recent games at each skill bracket - to keep you up-to-date on the latest trends. Whether you need advice on which hero best fits a draft, or aren't sure what to build after securing that coveted Blink Dagger, Plus Assistant is in your corner." - Source
