Dota 2: The eight PGL Bucharest Major playoff teams have been decided

It has been four gruelling days for the top Dota 2 teams in the world but now, the PGL Bucharest Major group stages have come to an end. I’m sure many Dota 2 fans are looking forward to the playoffs that kick off this weekend, but what happened during the group stages?

Well, the group stages were a best-of-one affair with a 5-round Swiss-system format. Those who ended up in the were eliminated, while the top eight heads to the quarterfinals, one step closer to that $500,000 (R5,919,725) first place price and a whopping 750 Dota Pro Circuit Points. VGJ.Thunder and Evil Geniuses went undefeated during the group stages, while Newbee, and Team Secret only dropped one match.

The International 2017 champions, Team Liquid, as well as OpTic Gaming and TNC Pro Team, scraped by on the final day to make it to the playoffs with a score of 3-2. The final day was a day of heartbreak for OG fans and all we can do now is “Dream Green” for the upcoming Minors and Majors. Alongside OG, compLexity Gaming and Natus Vincere also fell in the last day of the group stages, which was quite disappointing for me because if Na’Vi were to qualify, I would have had a “Na’Vi is back!” in the title somewhere.

The final eight teams are:

  • VGJ.Thunder
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Newbee
  • Team Secret
  • Team Liquid
  • OpTic Gaming
  • TNC Pro Team

The teams will have a much-deserved break before the playoffs start this Friday. Check out the image below for the schedule. Eastern European time is the same as South African time, so our local gamers can mark those times and dates on their calendars.

Keep in mind it is a single-elimination bracket in a best-of-three format with the finals being best-of-five, so losing one match means a team is eliminated from the tournament. Only the top 4 teams earn Dota Pro Circuit points, so the quarterfinals are sure to be extremely intense because everyone wants to go to The International 2018.

I, for one, am most excited about the Evil Geniuses versus Team Liquid matchup. If I had to predict the outcome of the quarterfinals, I would go with Newbee, Virtus.Pro, VGJ.Thunder and Team Liquid as the victors.

Which teams do you think will advance to the semifinals and which team do you think will lift the PGL Bucharest trophy this Sunday? Let us know in the comment section below.
