ESL One Katowice – Virtus.Pro crushes ViCi Gaming to claim the Dota 2 Major

ESL One.jpg

The ESL One Katowice Major was an amazing Dota 2 tournament and I was on the edge of my seat throughout the playoffs this weekend. There were some concerns about Virtus.Pro going into the tournament as they recently swapped Ilya 'Lil' Ilyuk for Vladimir 'RodjER' Nikogosyan, but those concerns were swiftly put to rest as the team looked stronger than ever.

Going into the playoffs, Virtus.Pro took down fan-favourites Evil Geniuses 2-1 and then 2-0’ed a very strong Fnatic side, while Chinese powerhouse ViCi Gaming managed to secure a victory over The International 2017 champions Team Liquid. Clearly, ViCi Gaming was on form, but nothing could prepare them for the onslaught that Virtus.Pro threw at them during the Grand Finals. Virtus.Pro only dropped one game in the best-of-five Grand Finals, almost making it look easy beating down one of the strongest Chinese sides out there, especially in the first two games.

Check out the tournament standings including how much money and Dota Pro Circuit Points each team won, as well as all four games of the Grand Finals below.

Standings and prize distribution

  • 1st place: Virtus.pro - $400,000 and 750 DCP
  • 2nd place: ViCi Gaming - $200,000 and 450 DCP

Grand Final Game One

Grand Final Game Two

Grand Final Game Three

Grand Final Game Four

Virtus.Pro looked nearly unstoppable and the addition of Vladimir 'RodjER' Nikogosyan, in my opinion, did wonders for the team. It remains to be seen how the will perform in the next Major and Minor tournaments leading up to The International 2018, but they are definitely a team to be feared at the moment.
