PlayStation Store prices on the rise? - First standard edition game of 2018 above R1,120 appears

PlayStation Store Price Hike.jpg

Zuma is out, the Rand is getting stronger but that does not mean we will be buying our games for any cheaper any time soon. Actually, this morning I woke up to a frightening discovery. While putting together our weekly PlayStation Store highlights article, I noticed something strange. There is a new game listed for pre-order on the store and the price is much higher than most games up for pre-order.

Update: We have updated the article to reflect other prices we found a bit higher than Extinctions. This puts the game at the highest pre-order price of 2018 so far.

The upcoming game called Extinction is listed for R1,129. That is also the standard edition of the game with the Deluxe Edition listed for R1,199. When comparing this new pre-order to other titles on the PlayStation Store it is clear that while it is not the most expensive game, it is the most expensive currently listed for 2018. Other games come close to it like NBA 2K17 that released in September 2016. NBA 2K17 is still listed for R1,199. The upcoming God of War comes in at R1,069, OnRush at the same price and even Ni No Kuni II is listed at R1,069 for the standard edition.

This makes Extinction quite an expensive standard edition game listed for 2018. If you look back at last year, Star Wars: Battlefront II, Call of Duty: WWII and even Monster Hunter: World, released in January was R60 cheaper.  Furthermore, when you compare the price of the game to other titles, nothing up for pre-order costs that much. We only see a few games, mainly 2K titles such as NBA 2K17, WWE 2K17, and one other Watch Dogs 2 at R1,199. keep in mind that these titles have been released already. Both 2K games as well as Watch Dogs 2 released in 2016. One other game, Dragon ball Xenoverse beats all of these prices at R1,399. This too released at the end of 2016.

Could this mean that all pre-orders being listed on the store from now on will be more expensive? Or could it just be exclusive to Extinction? Over the past few years, PlayStation Store prices have soared. When the PS4 was released, new titles hit R899, then R999 a year after that and then they broke through the R1000 mark in 2015 with Q4 2016 being the biggest jump up to R1200 and up. They are going up yearly and this new listing is not a good sign of things to come.

We have reached out to PlayStation South Africa to find out what this means for us and we will keep you posted as we learn more. This could either be a price error or a sign that in 2018 we will need to budget more money for gaming if we are going digital.
