Star Wars Battlefront 2: EA talks return of microtransactions and sale numbers

We all know that one day, microtransactions will return to Star Wars Battlefront 2. Even without microtransactions, the game’s progression system isn’t perfect, but with this latest news of a “monetization feature” being reinstated in the game, I sense a disturbance in the Force.

If you didn’t know about the controversy surrounding Star Wars Battlefront 2’s microtransactions, I guess you’ve been living in a galaxy far, far away, since it was a big talking point in the gaming community for a long time. EA DICE has done a great job of releasing free content and making the game better so far and last week, they revealed that a revamped progression system and more is coming to a game.

However, that dark, microtransaction cloud still hangs over the heads of fans. Now, the return of microtransactions have been confirmed and it is coming sooner than many players might have hoped. The news comes from a screenshot posted on Twitter by Sarah E. Needleman, a Tech Reporter for Wall Street Journal, where she posted the full short article.

According to the Wall Street Journal article, EA’s Chief Financial Officer, Blake Jorgensen, said that EA will reinstate a monetization feature in Star Wars Battlefront 2 in the “next few months” and continued by telling WSJ that “We’ll do it when we think it’s ready”.

Mr Jorgensen continued by blaming the game’s loot box controversy in large part for why the game did not reach its projected sales figure of 10 million units sold, according to the WSJ report. The game has sold 9 million units instead of the aforementioned prediction of 10 million for the holiday quarter.

One positive out of all of this is that EA is taking their time, so hopefully, they will get to a point where the microtransactions aren’t all that bad. I, for one, hope that when microtransactions return, they will be cosmetic only. Although the game’s current progression system isn’t perfect, I would hate to see players purchasing loot boxes that contain powerful Star Cards with real money, because that would be the definition of pay-to-win.

If microtransactions have to return, how would you like to see them implemented in Star Wars Battlefront 2? Let us know in the comment section below.
