StarCraft 2 is going free-to-play

StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty is one of the greatest RTS games of all time and soon everyone will be able to play it...no strings attached. During the BlizzCon opening ceremony this weekend, Mike Morhaime, CEO of Blizzard announced that from 14 November 2017, players will be able to play the entire Wings of Liberty campaign at no cost at all.

While many people were happy about this news, it made us wonder what would be in store for us if we already own the game. Well, if you do already own the base game then you will get Heart of the Swarm at no additional cost. Unfortunately, that is where the offer ends meaning that if you own Heart of the Swarm then you will not be getting Legacy of the Void as a free game. This does kind of make me feel a little cheated as I am probably not the only person who just does not have Legacy of the Void, but oh well.

Included for free is the ranked multiplayer ladder which players will unlock after achieving 10 First Wins of the Day in either unranked or versus modes. All co-op commanders will also be playable for free as well up to level five. These include Kerrigan, Raynor, and Artanis. If you are looking to further enhance your StarCraft experience then you can look at buying the packs too as each one including Hearts of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops will be available at $14,99.

This is a bold move for Blizzard especially given that the games are not based off a free-to-play model, but it also opens the doors for players who are interested in trying out the game for the first time. Keep in mind that StarCraft: Remastered is also out so you can give that a go too if you want to give the entire StarCraft experience a go at once. It would be pretty cool to start off with that and then lead into the later games.

Will this free-to-play model benefit you? Let us know in the comments below.
