Don't expect Virtual Reality on Xbox One X anytime soon

On 7 November 2017, the world’s most powerful console created so far, the Xbox One X will launch. For us South Africans, we learned last Friday at rAge that the console will arrive on our shores before Christmas 2017 and will cost R7,499. We are extremely excited for the Xbox One X’s launch and I, for one, will be picking one up.

The console will support Virtual Reality (VR) and it definitely has the power needed, but when will future Xbox One X owners be able to experience VR on their powerful console? Not soon it seems…

In a massive interview recently posted by Wired, the Senior Director of Product Management and Planning at Microsoft, Albert Penello, talked about VR on the Xbox One X and that they learned from Kinect. Below, you can read an extract from the interview that seems to indicate the Xbox One X won’t get VR anytime soon:

There’s still a tonne of experimentation in VR. That’s not designed to be a backhanded statement. There are obviously consumer products. Moving the problem into the display of your goggles versus the limits of the TV was a result of some of the 3D TV challenges. But VR has so much potential. Is it a viable consumer product? For a certain size of audience.

We learned with Kinect and the Wii that just translating a typical game experience to VR is not a winning strategy. It’s the oddball VR-specific stuff that makes it sing. It wasn’t something we wanted to distract developers with this year.” - Source

If you remember, the Xbox One launch bundled with Kinect was quite the debacle and let’s face it, the Kinect is basically dead at the moment. VR probably isn’t going away anytime soon as there are some exciting things ahead, like Skyrim VR as an example. Even so, it remains to be seen what the price of a VR device with the Xbox One X will be and I think we would all have a more matured experience when VR arrives sometime in the future for the Xbox One X.

It is also important to note that PlayStation VR has already been out for nearly a year (16 October 2016 release), so at this time, if you want a VR experience on console this year, then the PS4 is your only option.

Do you think the Xbox One X needs VR at launch or close to it, or do you think the console’s power and 4K capabilities are enough? Let us know in the comment section below.
