Half-Life 2: Episode 3 – Ex-Valve writer shares plot summary ideas in some riveting fan-fiction

Half-Life 3 story.jpg

Last month, I reported on Half-Life series writer and former Valve employee, Marc Laidlaw, saying that Half-Life 3 would have probably not been the end of our favourite crowbar-wielding protagonist, Gordon Freeman.

As we all know, there has been no official word of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or Half-Life 3 and many of us gamers have begun to believe that the game will never happen. Well, for those who just want to know how the story might have ended, Mr Laidlaw has published a very interesting read on his personal website.

The story synopsis is, of course, fan-fiction and portrayed as a letter from a physicist Gertrude Fremont, which is quite an obvious reference. You can read an extract from the post below.

“I hope this letter finds you well. I can hear your complaint already, “Gertie Fremont, we have not heard from you in ages!” Well, if you care to hear excuses, I have plenty, the greatest of them being I’ve been in other dimensions and whatnot, unable to reach you by the usual means. This was the case until eighteen months ago, when I experienced a critical change in my circumstances and was redeposited on these shores. In the time since, I have been able to think occasionally about how best to describe the intervening years, my years of silence. I do first apologize for the wait, and that done, hasten to finally explain (albeit briefly, quickly, and in very little detail) events following those described in my previous letter (referred to herewith as Epistle 2).” - Source

You can read the full fan-fiction post archived here since Mr Laidlaw’s website has been under a lot of stress to what I can only expect to be very high traffic volumes. Keep in mind that this is just fiction from the ex-writer at Valve, fan-fiction if you will.

Even so, it is a very interesting read, something I think many Half-Life fans would enjoy. Fair word of warning though, the story won’t offer you closure on all the topics in the Half-Life universe.

What do you think about Marc Laidlaw’s fan-fiction piece and how do you think the Half-Life story will (or would have) ended? Let us know in the comment section below.
