July 2017 video game releases

July 2017 games.jpg

At first glance, July's game releases look a bit on the bland side, but upon closer inspection, a world of magic unfolds. We have an "irreverent party quiz" that'll work best with your besties. Then there's the extremely enjoyable Switch releases, a visit to "a strange, beautiful, magical creation," and the call to arms for Guardians.

That’s You

Release date: 05/07 WW (Part of July’s PS Plus lineup)

Platform: PS4 exclusive

Genre: Social game / Party

Mode: Multiplayer

Age restriction: TBA

Game info: According to the "That's You" announcement trailer, "The only thing you need to know is each other." If I understand the game correctly, revolves around answering questions about the other players. The questions take on different forms and topics, and can also include things like making up a photo of another player that best describes something about him or her. It involves a lot of (distorted) selfies and making good fun of each other. Just grab some friends, connect your cell phones, and let the fun begin. “Welcome to an irreverent party quiz where you and up to five of your friends and family get to find out what you really think about each other.”

Splatoon 2

Release date: 21/07 WW

Platform: Nintendo Switch exclusive

Genre: Third-person shooter

Modes: Single-player, multiplayer

Age restriction: TBA

Game info: How much fun is Splatoon on the Switch, and how does multiplayer work when playing from South Africa since the original had a few issues with matchmaking? It works seamlessly and is a joy to play on the Switch.  We previewed the game, and can say that in many ways Splatoon 2 is like its predecessor, and we often felt like we were playing the original.  In matches, lag was non-existent. No rubber banding, no "I killed you firsts", nothing. The experience was just flawless from start to finish.

Pyre

Release date: 25/07 WW

Platforms: PC & PS4

Genre: Action role-playing

Mode: Single-player

Age restriction: TBA

Game info: Pyre comes from the ingenious Supergiant Games who gave us Bastion and Transistor. Bastion is one of my top 10 favourite games of all time, so I can’t wait to play Pyre. Looking at the previous two games from Supergiant, we can expect a great soundtrack and beautiful art. According to the official description, “Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through an ancient competition spread across a vast, mystical purgatory.” According to Polygon, “Pyre is a strange, beautiful, magical creation.” I am sold.
