About Pokémon GO’s meteoric rise and the trading update

Developer Niantic Labs released their augmented reality game, Pokémon GO, for Android and iOS devices last week. Since then, it seems that almost everyone has caught the Pokémon fever.

Pokémon GO's astounding first week

Pokémon GO hasn’t even launched globally yet and is already a massive success. The game is currently only available in the United States, Australia and New Zealand (for exactly one week) and is already topping the charts for both Android and iOS devices according to a Bloomberg report.

Similar Web reports explains the game’s meteoric rise since its release in the United States, stating that it has already overtaken the popular “dating” app Tinder and is on the heels of Twitter:

“Only 2 days after the app’s release, it was already installed on 5.16% of all Android devices in the US. If that doesn’t seem like much, consider that by Thursday, July 7th, Pokemon GO was already installed on more US Android phones than Tinder. t’s not just on installs where Pokémon GO is killing it, on app engagement as well, the app’s usage has been unbelievably high.

Over 60% of those who have downloaded the app in the US are using it daily, meaning around 3% of the entire US Android population are users of the app. This metric, which we refer to as Daily Active Users has put Pokémon GO neck and neck with Twitter, and in a few more days, Pokémon GO will likely have more users Daily Active Users than the well-established social network.” - Source

Shares in Nintendo, a Niantic Labs investor, has seen a massive increase since the game’s launch according to a Bloomberg report which states: “Nintendo Co. surged by its daily limit, jumping as much as 25 percent, as its new Pokemon Go game tops smartphone app rankings.” - Source

Nintendo is having their best day since 1983, according to David Ingles of Bloomberg.

The early statistics are highly impressive to say the least. However, Pokémon GO is just getting started, as the developer plans to release a trading feature soon.

Trading and future updates

In an interview with Business Insider, Niantic Labs CEO John Hanke revealed that players will soon be able to trade the Pokémon they have captured with others, stating that it is “kind of a core element” for the game:

“Trading ties in nicely with one of Pokémon Go's core virtues, which is that it encourages players to interact with each other in both the virtual and real worlds. Swapping Pokémon around would foster those kinds of interactions.” - Source

Mr. Hanke also said that all the game’s features, for example Pokéstops and Gyms exist only in their “most basic versions” right now, but with future updates players will be able to "customize their functions in other ways."

Further, the developer will also introduce “some kind of global leadership scoreboard” for players, so you can finally strive to be the “very best, like no one ever was”.

Pokémon Go isn’t officially released in South Africa yet. However, there are still ways you can play the game right now on your Android device; but it might give hackers control over your phone.

If you are interested in purchasing the Pokémon GO Plus Bluetooth accessory for Android and iOS devices, you can pre-order it right now from local retailer Raru for R609. The Pokémon GO Plus accessory is expected to arrive in South Africa on 29 July 2016. Further, you can find local Pokémon GO players by joining the Pokémon GO South Africa Facebook group.
