Updated with winners | ICON Is A Thing and we have tickets up for grabs

ICON ARTICLE Cover.jpg

By now you probably know there’s a ton of fun to be had at conventions such as rAge and Geekfest. But with the former so far away, and the latter long past, avid expo goers might be left with a void this winter.

Fret not friends, because we have just what you need to fill the gap.

Winners

We want to thank everyone that entertained us with their ultimate Superhero fantasy ;). We enjoyed all of them and we thank you for the memories. Here's one of our favourites, by : "Lobo. Big cigars, Foul mouth, and no shits will be given attitude. Plus the sweet memories of having to hide the comics from my parents as a kid."

We wish we could give you all a ticket, but unfortunately, there could only be five winners. The following people had Longshot overseeing their entry.

  1. The_Ghost_Skull
  2. Cassandra de Wet
  3. Shakira Assad
  4. Sugar & Snark
  5. Stuart Rosenberg

Keep an eye on your email for further instructions.

Update ends.

Obviously I’m referring to ICON, since it's splashed all over the article title. Now that I’ve got that semi-dramatic and somewhat useless intro out of the way, let’s move on to the really important bits.

Occurring annually for the past 23 years ICON is billed as the “largest consumer hobby gaming and comic event in Southern Africa”. OK, that’s a line straight from their website and it probably hasn’t convinced you to buy tickets. But you should buy tickets, because this year’s iteration of ICON is going to be far, far better than what the organizers have put together in the past.

Need more convincing? Good. I’m ready. Firstly, you have to know that we have five double weekend passes to give away, more about that a bit later. Secondly, here's a video with madeyoulook* outlining everything to see and do at ICON!

Shiny New Venue

ICON 2016 will be hosted at the Gallagher Convention Centre from the 24 to 26 June. This is a major step up from the usual community centres and halls that have become synonymous with the event. The change in venue means a lot more space, bigger and better exhibitor booths, and of course the air-conditioning. The change (or upgrade) in venue also means that the organizers now have the space to host panels and workshops with various well known guest speakers.

Special Guests and Discussion Panels

The biggest draw-card in this regard is the attendance of Raymond E. Feist. This 12 time New York Times best-selling author will be at the event for all 3 days and will take part in 3 separate panel discussions – one for each day of the convention. Apart from Raymond’s sessions, you will be able to attend discussions hosted by cartoonist Rico Schacherl (of Madam & Eve fame), local gaming personality Pippa Tshabalala, as well as Arthur Goldstuck and Nikki Bush.

So Many Board Games

If taking part in these panel discussions doesn’t tickle your fancy then there are many, many other fun things to see and do at ICON. At the top of my list, and by no small measure let me tell you, are the board games and table top games. One of the best things about ICON is that exhibitors always setup tables to let people try their games. There’s no charge, just grab any game that catches your eye and have fun! To my mind, this is fantastic way to discover new games or to play test one that you are interested in.

Out of this world Cosplay

A Con wouldn’t be a Con if it didn’t include Cosplay and ICON will be boasting some amazing local talent. There are no diary conflicts (as with GeekFest and FanCon) so you can expect the likes of Kombokitten, Baka Sakura, and Sliding Doors Cosplay to awe and dazzle you with their creations. Gamezone and madeyoulook* will be shooting a cosplay video at ICON, so get ready for your close-up!

Why not checkout or GeekFest Cosplay video and see just how fun dressing up can be.

There will also be a Cosplay Competition happening on Sunday, with the finals scheduled to happen on the main stage at 4pm that day.

A Slew of Other Things to See and Do

For all you zombie apocalypse lovers, ICON will be hosting a massive zombie themed event, so check their Facebook and web pages for more details. Battle Heritage SA will be there, if you fancy your chances at defeating one of their knights. If you prefer something less scary then there’s a geek-themed comedy night happening on Saturday evening featuring Vittorio Leonardi, Hannes Brummer, Warren Robertson, Alyn Adams and Paul Cowan. As always, there will be tons of exhibitors and stalls offering their goods and wears to convention goers.

ICON 2016 will be powered by AlwaysOn WiFi meaning every panel discussion on the main stage will be streamed online and every attendee will have access to WiFi during the event. And that bring us to the ticket prices.

Ticket Prices

A day pass will set you back R100, whilst a weekend pass only costs R150. This is quite a reasonable fee as you also get access to the panel discussions. But, please take note that you need to purchase a separate ticket if you want to attend the comedy night. There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available. These will set you back R895, but they come with numerous perks including undercover parking, front row seats to the panel discussions, access to the comedy night on Saturday and a dinner on Sunday, a free mug and t-shirt, as well as private autograph sessions with guests and panelists, including Raymond E. Feist and Rico Schacherl.

For more info on the tickets please follow this link.

5 Double Weekend Passes Up For Grabs!

(By entering, you agree to the terms and conditions. Please ensure that you read the Terms and Conditions. Please remember that you have to be 18 years or older, from South Africa and have a valid Disqus account.)

Les Allen and the rest of the team responsible for putting together ICON were generous enough to sponsor us five double full weekend passes to the event – so that means five people stand a chance to win a ticket for themselves and a friend. All you have to do to stand a chance at winning, is reply to the following question in the comment section below:

  • Who is your favourite comic book character? Give at least one reason for your answer.

The competition is now open and and closes at 12 PM NOON on 22 June 2016, unless otherwise informed by MWEB. A big thank you to ICON for the prizes. Why don't you give them a Like and a Follow. While you're at it, you should definitely follow madeyoulook* on Twitter and subscribe to their YouTube channel.

Lastly, I've been to previous iterations of this convention and I must admit that the 2016 version has me seriously excited. See you there!
