NAG Jam

The time for local game developers has come, as the second ever NAG Jam is set for rAge this weekend.

If you are wondering what exactly the NAG Jam is, here is a quick breakdown for all those scratching their heads in confusion. The NAG Jam is a game jam, and game jams are essentially game development challenges that occur within a very strict time limit. In other words, participants (either solo or in teams) are given a limited time in which to create short, often highly experimental games formed around a specific theme.

The NAG Jam runs over 72 hours and it differs from most game jams for two reasons. Firstly, there’s a prize pool of R15,000 at stake, which is very generously sponsored by Intel. Secondly, the best games we receive are put on display at rAge for thousands of visitors to experience.

The competition will officially kick off when NAG announce the theme of the NAG Lan on their Twitter account at 7 pm on Thursday the 3rd of March. The event will continue until Sunday the 6th at 7 pm.  Entrants can reside anywhere within the SADC (Southern African Development Community), and you don’t actually need to visit rAge Cape Town in order for your game to be selected as a finalist.

Intel is kindly offering anyone who’s willing to get super adventurous with the jam the chance to use one of their snazzy RealSense cameras to power their game. The camera opens up the possibility for a range of uniquely interesting games and mechanics, and in addition to actually loaning participants a RealSense camera with which to develop, Intel has also pledged to offer training and assistance to any jammers who’re keen to use the tech. Visit the Intel site to have a look at some of the cool stuff that’s been made for RealSense.

DGL Masters

The Telkom Digital Gaming League (DGL) will be hosting the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Masters Cape Town Regional at rAge, where teams will be competing live on the show floor. Visitors to the expo will be able to spectate the entire tournament with live commentary. The online group stages started, so you can follow the progress of the eight competing teams here.

The Astro Gaming Cup

ASTRO Gaming will be hosting a Call of Duty: Black Ops III invitational tournament with prizes to the value of R50,000 being awarded to the top three teams. The tournament will take place on Stand 5 and will be a round-robin to single-elimination format.

“After the recent launch of the ASTRO brand in South Africa, and the immediate warm reception by the community, we wanted to help give back by supporting some of the local gaming events. We are excited to help support both rAge expo, and the South African gaming community by helping to provide another local platform for competition,” said Walter Duccini, Director of International Marketing for ASTRO Gaming.

The ASTRO Gaming Cup will be run by ZombieGamer in partnership with Clan Connection and all the action will be streamed live.

HWBOT World Tour

The HWBOT World Tour 2016 has included South Africa as an official stop this year and will be at rAge in Cape Town hosting their World Series Overclocking Competition for extreme overclockers. This is one of the six qualifying locations for the HWBOT World Championship and you’ll be able to see some of the world’s top overclockers in action at rAge. The winner of this qualifier will be awarded a ticket to the finals in Berlin. Expect to see plenty of liquid nitrogen and some world records being broken.

If you’re a rookie overclocker you might be interested in entering their amateur competition, and they’ll also be hosting some workshops over the weekend.

For more info go check out their event page on Facebook.

If you’re visiting rAge this weekend then be sure to pop in at the home_coded booth, where games that have been made by SA game developers will be on display.

home_coded is an initiative that was started by NAG in November 2012 with an aim to showcase South Africa’s game development talent, and promote local growth in this exciting industry. Not only can you meet the local devs and chat to them about their projects and game development in general, but you’ll have hands-on time with some of the titles on the stand which consist of early-development, mid-development, and completed games.

Tabletop gaming

All three major Unplug Yourself suppliers (, Skycastle Games and Blowfish Entertainment) will be exhibiting in the Play Zone. Those three suppliers encompass the major tabletop gaming spheres, namely board games, miniatures-based strategy games and card games respectively.

As for what to spend your money on, has confirmed that their entire late 2015 catalogue will be on shelves, including mega-hits like Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, as well as newer games like Codenames and Double Feature.

Cosplay on-the-spot prizes

If you are a cosplay enthusiast, then this one is for you. All you need to do is show up to the rAge Expo and hope that one of the talent scouts are watching you strut your stuff on the exhibition floor. There will be several, unnamed, spot prizes to be handed out.

You are also recommended to look out for the Cosplay area to have your photo taken and uploaded to Facebook. Read more about the cosplay at rAge here.
