BF4: Legacy Operations coming soon, but not on last-gen

Battlefield 4 (BF4) is getting a free DLC called Legacy Operations before the end of 2015. Legacy Operations contains a classic Battlefield 2 map Dragon Valley. However, Xbox 360 and PS3 players will be left behind as the DLC isn’t coming to last-gen consoles. Here are all the details.

Get ready for Dragon Valley 2015

If you’ve ever played Battlefield 2, you probably remember Dragon Valley, a massive map with a huge number of flags and destructible / repairable bridges. EA asked last year which classic map the community wants in Battlefield 4. Now, the results are in and Dragon Valley is the clear favorite.

DICE explains the decision to leave last-gen behind for the DLC, but also notes that they won’t stop supporting last-gen.

“We really wanted to push the envelope with Dragon Valley 2015, and that meant being able to make a bigger level, with a larger scale than anything currently in Battlefield 4. Because of that, we made the decision to focus on the more powerful platforms. This doesn't mean we're no longer supporting players on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with critical updates when needed, but we really wanted to try something big for Dragon Valley, and we think that when you play it, you'll see the difference." - Source

Dragon Valley 2015 isn’t just a simple copy/paste, but tweaked and adjusted for a current-gen experience. Some aspects are carried over - for example bridges that can be destroyed or repaired - while others are being tweaked. While the original Dragon Valley was designed to compensate for Battlefield 2’s engine’s poor draw distance, that isn’t needed in Battlefield 4.

DICE explains the adjustments to the new map with regards to draw distance:

"We tackled this in several ways: First we increased the terrain verticality to closer mimic a real life Chinese river valley - and to give us more terrain occlusion for long distances, especially on the central island.

We also added a dynamic cloud layer, which not only adds a welcomed air-to-ground separation in terms of gameplay, but also helps shroud far distances at ground level. This has the added bonus effect of allowing you to have intense aerial firefights above the cloud level, which looks really, really cool in Battlefield 4." - Source

If you loved Battlefield 2, you are probably extremely excited about the Dragon Valley 2015 remake, especially since it is free. The Legacy Operations DLC will be out "later this year" for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 alongside the Holiday update.
