How to reduce Witcher 3 lag on low-end PC's

Witcher 3 fixes.jpg

PC gaming does not come cheap. How many of you had to upgrade to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? I have a GeForce GTX 570, and the minimum spec requires the GTX 660 or the Radeon HD 7870. My colleague, Wessel Minnie, has an overclocked AMD Radeon HD 6870 and according to him you just turn everything down and Bob's your uncle. I'll rather save up some cash and buy a graphics card that can handle 2015's AAA games. Better yet, it's time for a complete overhaul, and we've just the guide to walk you through it; "Affordable PC builds for new-gen gaming."

What to do if you can't afford to upgrade and you desperately want to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? You install a mod.

TechJeep.com has you covered. According to them the mod changes the game settings that consumes the most GPU power, resulting in a smoother gameplay experience. The mod is also compatible with patch 1.03. I checked with our techie, and he gives the mod his nod of approval. "Nexusmods tend to be safe. They are the reason I have 1000 hours on Skyrim."

Witcher 3 Mod

Witcher 3 screenshot with mod installed

  • Changes the resolution to 800x600
  • Reduces the range of display shadows
  • Reduces range of display grass
  • Reduces grass ring size by 50%

If you don't want to install the mod, you can just turn your settings down like my colleague did, but it won't reduce your lag. According to him the game doesn't run smooth, (fps at 30-35) but the overall experience is still good enough. TechJeep.com tested the mod and reports; "we have seen a significant improvement in overall framerates and there’s not much quality downgrade. On a low end GPU such as the AMD Radeon HD 5770 there was around 50 fps in the forest and around 30+ frames in Novigard."
