10 Reasons why gamers love to game

There are a multitude of reasons people love playing games, from challenging themselves to trolling others. There does not have to be one singular reason for someone to enjoy gaming, as it could be more than one, all or none of the reasons listed below. Here are the top 10 reasons why we think gamers, game.

(Please note that this top 10 list is not in order of the authors perceived level of importance, as everyone has their own reasons for playing games.)

1. The challenge of difficult games

Games that offer an intense challenge to the player and subsequently overcoming said challenge is definitely my personal favorite reason to game. Although the reason might not be for everyone, games like Dark Souls 2 has proven that there are some players out there that crave for a challenge. The upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive and spiritual successor to Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, will resurrect this dying breed of gamers and define this generation through brutal difficulty.

2. Socializing with strangers

Meeting new people is a hard thing to do for some people, due to a variety of real life circumstances. Games such as World of WarCraft (WoW) and many other MMOs help people connect to others and meet a large number of fellow players. Socializing with strangers on a regular basis via an online game is one of the top reasons why some gamers enjoy a specific genre; it can keep a player engaged for hours on end, just chatting away with random people while they game.

3. Playing with friends

There are some gamers who start or continue playing because their friends play. From a personal experience, I have had quite a few friends start playing games after they visited a LAN and saw just how much fun is to be had. Furthermore, gamers sometimes continue playing a specific game because their friends are playing it. For example, continuing to play WoW because you have made a ton of friends in a specific guild could be a main reason why the game is so hard to completely let go of, as they keep returning for more.

4. Relaxing entertainment

Gaming is, first and foremost, a form of digital entertainment. Unlike gaming addiction, one of the best reasons to game for the average person is to have a relaxing time. People come home from work or school and want to relax with some easy or simply entertaining games. Some serious gamers believe that casual gaming is a crime, which could not be further from the truth. There is absolutely nothing wrong if a player’s reason for gaming is just to relax. However, some people just have a competitive spirit that drives their reason for gaming.

5. Gaming addiction

Gaming addiction is a real issue, as some players get so trapped in the game world that they develop health issues. Carpal tunnel and even death can occur due to prolonged gaming sessions. Some of the main culprits are games such as WoW or Diablo III, which are in my experience some of the most addictive games out there. Gaming addition is not limited to big budget titles, as even mobile games can become extremely addictive. This reason to game is definitely the most negative one as everything, including gaming, should be taken in moderation.

6. Getting away from it all

Being immersed in a vast gaming world is one of the most fun experiences one can have. Games like Skyrim offer a world where players can literally get lost in, spending countless hours as another person in another world. There are many reasons why people would want to escape from the real world and live in another, from heartbreak to simply being fed up with their current situation; it could also just be fun. Personally, I can not wait to explore the vast world that is No Man’s Sky when it finally gets released later this year.

7. A competitive spirit

Just like any other sport, gaming has a competitive spirit some players enjoy immensely. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games such as Dota 2 and  League of Legends or the upcoming Heroes of the Storm (HotS) foster an environment of competitive play that is very addictive in itself. If you would like to win a beta key for HotS, head on over to our giveaway page right now. Playing games because someone has a competitive spirit could foster a healthy eSports environment and lead to a player becoming a professional gamer in the future.

8. Making money from eSports

A career as a professional gamer has become a reality in today’s society. Although it is still almost impossible in South Africa to make a living out of playing games, the eSports community is ever growing. For some players, the reason they game is to become professional gamer, making money out of games. Top teams competing in events such as The International IV have made a boatload of cash, whilst players move to different gaming organizations which offer a better salary or conditions.

9. Writing news stories or making Youtube videos

Some people such as myself and some of my colleagues here at MWEB GameZone play certain games to review them or write news / opinion stories just like this one. Do not get me wrong, everyone here loves gaming, but the reason I get up at 6am in the morning and start playing a game is because it is a job, just like any other. Furthermore, some gamers make a living out of doing Youtube videos, making money off the ads and viewer numbers, for example PewDiePie or The Cynical Brit.

10. Ruining the experience for other gamers

Probably the worst reason to game is to ruin the experience for other gamers. It is called trolling, and it is a toxic growth that has spread to the far reaches of almost every gaming community. Recently, the CEO of Twitter took a stance against online abuse and trolling. Furthermore, trolling could get you two years behind bars in the UK. Unfortunately, trolls are still a reality in gaming and will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future. It is not a good reason to play games, but it is definitely a prevalent one.

Closing Thoughts

Gamers enjoy gaming for a plethora of reasons, some of which might be a bit strange to the neutral onlooker. We all do what we love and there are plenty of good reasons to enjoy a specific genre of games of games in general.
