Gamer raided by Swat team in front of 60,000 viewers

Joshua Peters, a 27-year old streamer that goes by the name Koopatroopa787 on Twitch, was raided by ten swat officers yesterday as a stream viewer made a false call. Viewers of the stream realized what was happening at the same time as Peters when his mother called out to him about the arrival of the officers to his family residence.

An anonymous caller to the St Cloud Police Department in Minnesota, where Peters has lived since returning from a tour of duty with the US Air Force in Kuwait, had claimed to live at the address. The anonymous caller had said that someone "had shot their roommate, and now they were pointing a gun at them".  During the very same phone call, "two gun shots" were heard being fired before the call ended.

St Cloud Police Department then sent out ten armed SWAT members to the residence of Joshua Peters; that was currently being occupied by his mother and ten-year old brother. Upon arrival, the Swat forcefully entered the residence and "pointed their rifles at the 10-year-old boy" because he was at the door.

Visibly shaken, Joshua Peters, returned to his stream 15 minutes after the SWAT teams arrival. Below is the video of the victim of the attack and his response to the viewer whom 'Swatted' Peters family.

Before ending the show, the streamer turned back to the audience, and addressed his attacker. “I see you posting my address. I had police point a gun at my little brothers because of you. They could have been shot, they could have died. Because you chose to swat my stream. I don’t give a shit about what you have against me, or what I did to you. For that I am at a loss for words. Your gripe is with me. But do not involve my family in this. They don’t deserve it.”

Since the conclusion of the incident, Joshua Peters has appeared on DramaAlert, where he stated that he is currently working with Twitch.tv to track the IP address of the viewers that leaked his residential address on his chat. There have been suggested ties with the hacker group, Lizard squad whom also threatened to hack PlayStation earlier this year.

What is Swatting?

Swatting is the act of tricking an emergency service (via such means as hoaxing a 9-1-1 dispatcher) into dispatching an emergency response based on the false report of an ongoing critical incident. Episodes range from large to small; from the deployment of bomb squads, SWAT units and other police units and the concurrent evacuations of schools and businesses to a single fabricated police report meant to discredit an individual as a prank or personal vendetta. Another example of swatting happened last year when a "Kid gets beaten in Call of Duty, calls Police on winner, 60-man strong team responds."
