Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn Released!

Following up on the breadcrumbs regarding the GoG.com story, I was curious about this Wing Commander game - I had tried out the prologue game and showed good promise. I thought that they were one and the same, and luckily for me, turned out I was wrong.

I was a big fan of the original Wing Commander games on my parents old 286, and then brow-beating school chums to be able to play it their 386's because of the extra RAM and soundcards. Luckily things have changed with me having a reasonably beefy machine.

This new Wing Commander is a completely fan-mad game, using the open-sourced Freespace 2 engine. The storyline puts you in the shoes of 2nd Lieutenant David Markham, a recent OCS graduate in an accelerated flight training program. Victory and survival for humanity can only be bought at a terrible cost.

The storyline of the game runs parallel to the events in Wing Commander 3, and places the protagantist back in the Vega sector, the setting of the original Wing Commander 1 series.

I loaded this little pretty up, and played through the first two missions with incredible ease using a mouse and keyboard, but methinks I'm going to be whipping out the old dusty Logitech Extreme Wingman joystick which I keep just for these games (and for Mechwarrior Online when it comes out, but thats another story), and crank up the diffculty somewhat. I suspect the designers were hoping to lure in a new generation of gamers by slapping on the super-easy mode.

All in all, this game looks great, sounds great (except for a little bit of wooden voice-acting and some re-used people CGI) this game is fantasic. Really hard to believe that this game is fan-made, open-source, and free! I've been looking forward to a space shooter in the Wing Commander or Star Wars Series, such as the X-Wing and Tie Figther games of old. Something a bit faster than the  X series. Looks my wish came true!

This game is a whopping 7GB installed, but luckily relatively light on resources. Below are system spec requirements:

Windows

Minimum Specifications:

Windows® XP
1 GHz processor
2 GB RAM
128 MB 100% DirectX 9.0 compatible card
Windows® XP-compatible sound card
Windows® compatible mouse and keyboard
OpenAL
6 GB free HD space
Recommended Specifications:

Windows® Vista/7
2 GHz processor
4 GB RAM
512 MB NVIDIA® GeForce or ATI Radeon Shader 3.0 compatible card
Thrustmaster Afterburner or a similar input device
Macintosh

Minimum Specifications:

Keyboard and Mouse
Recommended Specifications:

Luckily this game uses a modified version of the Freespace2 Engine and doesnt require Freespace as a base to function. Linux versions of the games are set to be released at a later date.

Check out the Wing Commander Saga website here. To make things quicker for us local yokels, I've loaded this onto our local FTP server as well. Enjoy! I know I will!
