I’ve been following the press releases for Medal of Honor:
Warfighter for quite some time now. With
each new release, my concern for what Electronic Arts (EA) was trying to do
with this game just kept on growing. We know that the trademark of the Medal of
Honor franchise has always been to provide the gamer with an authentic as possible experience
of war. And therein exactly lays my concern.
War is not honorable.
Robert E. Lee said, “It is well that war is so terrible, or
we should grow too fond of it.” My problem with MOH: Warfighter and EA’s push
in advertising an authentic war experience was that it seemed they were portraying
being a soldier as something other than horrible.
The latest behind the scenes trailer from Linkin Park and
MOH: Warfighter, however, succeeded in putting to rest my concerns. Take a look
at this heart gripping trailer before we continue our talk.
The aim of MOH: Warfighter is to show the public a side of a
soldier’s life that we don’t consider enough. The music, the game, the
inclusion of realism, all are set to draw the player’s attention towards this
one focal point.
Soldiers experience loss, not just in terms of death, but in
a much more complicated and deeper way. The
stain that war leaves on the soul of a soldier can never be erased. We reap
the benefits of their sacrifices, while not understanding its cost. MOH:
Warfighter aims to give players a glimpse into that side of war, and this, is honorable.
If you’ve not yet seen the music video, “Castle of Glass”,
from Linkin Park and MOH: Warfighter, you have to check it out. I’ve also
included the lyrics; it is profound and deeply touching.
Take me down to the river bend,
Take me down to the fighting end,
Wash the poison from off my skin
Show me how to be whole again
Fly me up on a silver wing
Past the black where the sirens sing
Warm me up in a nova's glow
And drop me down to the dream below
Cause I'm only a crack in this castle of glass
Hardly anything there for you to see.
For you to see
Bring me home in a blinding dream
Through the secrets that I have seen
Wash the sorrow from off my skin
And show me how to be whole again
