Your September SA Gaming Events and Competitions Calendar

Spring is almost upon us! With the increasingly hot weather comes amazing local gaming events you can attend; from a festival too various LANS. There are also eSports events, some of which you can participate in while others you can watch online.

In September, you can watch top local Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) teams battle in the Evetech Champion’s League Final, support the team from South Africa in the Overwatch World Cup, experience the A MAZE Festival in Johannesburg and more.

The Overwatch World Cup

Early this month, South Africa was invited to the Overwatch World Cup and top local players started receiving emails from developer Blizzard Entertainment confirming that they have been nominated. Then, the local community could vote on which players they thought would make up the best team.The players have now been selected. You can find out who they are here.

You can support our local players cheering them on while they compete against international teams in the online qualifiers:

“Starting in September, many of these teams will take part in best-of-three, single-elimination online qualifiers. Then, at BlizzCon in November, sixteen teams will battle in round-robin group stages and single-elimination finals.” - Source

The team from South Africa will compete against 29 other teams in the European region where only six teams will qualify for the tournament’s main event at BlizzCon 2016. You can find more details about each player (except Visions) here.

Evetech Champion’s League Finals  

  • Info: The top six Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) teams in South Africa will shoot it out for their share of a massive R150,000 prize pool in the Evetech Champion’s League (ECL) tournament. You can watch the games live on Evetech’s YouTube channel or nAvTV’s CS:GO Youtube channel.
  • Date: 2 – 4 September 2016
  • Time: Tournament starts at 21:00pm on 2 September

A MAZE Festival

  • Info: The A MAZE Festival in Johannesburg is The 5th International Game and Playful Media Festival welcomes “African and international game developers, digital artists, forward thinkers, entrepreneurs, and digital activists to Johannesburg to exchange tools, skills, and ideas in the fields of independent games and playful media.” The festival will feature the “pick of African and international independent games and playful media, including workshops, talks, parties, and a games arcade.
  • Date: 31 August to 3 September 2016
  • Cost: There are several ticket options available, ranging from R250 to R500.

Cold Fusion LAN

  • Info: The Cold Fusion LAN is back with another monthly LAN, this time called the Apocalypse Edition. According to the event page on Facebook, there are “loads of prizes to be won” as well as food and beverages for sale. After this month’s LAN, the next dates to mark off in your calendar is 1 to 3 October 2016.

MGMS CS:GO Qualifier 2 

  • Info: The second stage of the MGMS CS:GO qualifier for PC. The top two teams in the Predator MGMS second qualifier will go on to face Aperture Gaming and Bravado Gaming in the Grand Final held on 1 and 2 October 2016.

Plan-G Gaming FIFA 2016 tournament

  • Info: Challenge other players in a FIFA 2016 tournament with a copy of FIFA 2017 up for grabs.
  • Date: 24 September 2016

MSSA Eastern Cape Provincial Championships

  • Info: Want to earn medals and colours for being the best MSSA-registered player in your province? Well, then you should keep the last weekend of the month open for the MSSA Eastern Cape Provincial Championships.

  • Cost: R60 registration with MSSA

FIFA 16 "Play Beautiful” Tournament  

  • Info: The FIFA 2016 “Play Beautiful” Xbox One tournament will accommodate 16 players and has some cash prizes up for grabs, for example the first place prize is R500 and a Black Ops III poster.

Kosta Games FIFA 16 Tournament  

  • Info: Kosta Games is hosting a FIFA 16 tournament with a first-place prize of R2000. The tournament will be held on the PlayStation 4. The event page reads: “Kosta Games in association with Ster Kinekor Entertainment & PlayStation South Africa present yet another fun filled PS4 FIFA 16 Tournament.”

League Evening  

There isn’t much information available for the League Evening event. The Facebook Page reads: “Calling all League of Legends players! This is for you! Join us for a League only evening. Details will be posted closer to the time.”

Telkom DGL tournaments

  • Info: There are several tournaments underway over at the Digital Gaming League (DGL) website, from Dota 2 to Rocket League for you to enter and compete against other South African gamers. You can also follow the Telkom DGL as it drives towards rAge 2016.
