Overwatch Trademark suspended - Blizzard vs. Mobile Overwatch App

by Kyle Wolmarans (Congo)  Posted Tuesday, January 13, 2015 3:16:00 PM

One of the most exciting reveals at Blizzcon 2014 had to be Blizzard's new First Person Shooter (FPS) Overwatch. An exciting aspect for Blizzard fans as the titan game developer has entered an entire new genre of gaming with Overwatch. Unfortunately on the 9th of January 2015 Overwatch's trademark was suspended "pending the ultimate disposition."

Rosti Reveals

The news surfacde when NeoGAF user Rosti revealed that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued a suspension letter for the trademark application for Overwatch. The suspension is due to a mobile application with the same name filed in July 2014 by Innovis Labs, Inc. Unfortunately for Blizzard this predates their application and is now subject for confusion. According to Rosti, Blizzard made no applications to counter any arguments regarding the confusion and thus the application has been suspended.

The other Overwatch

I think I speak for us all when saying we're extremely excited for Overwatch (The Blizzard game), so what's standing in the way? Overwatch, stating "IT'S GAME TIME FOR REAL," looks like an extremely interesting concept.

"Inspired by classic first-person shooter video games, Overwatch is the next generation of interactive gaming. Using Overwatch, all the technology you’ve come to love from combat and first-person shooter video games is available in real life - right on your smartphone. Overwatch isn’t just another smartphone game; it’s a tactical utility to enhance airsoft, paintball and first-person shooter gameplay. It’s not just game time. It’s game time. For real.

From the looks of things it's a mobile application designed for airsoft or paintball which mounts to your arm or the rail of your gun to provide information on other players who own the application too. Basically all players equip the application via their cellphone and they're able to see each other and communicate, as seen in the video below.

Is this not the coolest thing you've seen today? I know a few people who would love this. To be completely honest, I'm not even mad anymore, this is amazing.

Blizzard, please?

What will Blizzard do now that their "revolutionary" game may need a new name. No action has been taken yet, and IGN have prompted Blizzard for a response but haven't gotten one yet. All fans of Blizzard games, FPS games and games in general are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the alpha testing phase, but now we may have to wait even longer. We can only assume Blizzard is taking action, but could face a total rebrand of their new venture. What else could we call it? Let's take another look at the trailer and try come up with something.

The obvious choice here would be Guardian's of The Galaxy, but that would bring us back to square one. There's even a gauntlet. The Overwatcher's? Team Over Fortress 3? The list could go on. What would you rename it?
