Uncapped ADSL FAQ cont.

Does MWEB have any plans of launching an 8mb uncapped ADSL offering?

Consumers can definitely expect an 8 Mbps uncapped offering from MWEB when Telkom starts upgrading their current 4 Mbps ADSL lines. An 8 Mbps uncapped service will rely on infrastructure upgrades and high bandwidth allocations, be assured that MWEB will do what is needed to ensure high service levels.

What is a shaped service?

A shaped service is a moderated manner in which data is delivered to your computer through your ADSL line. Shaping can be seen as the control or management of network traffic to optimize performance and to protect the overall quality of service and customer experience. This is achieved by performing protocol prioritization between different classes of traffic. The priority class comprises of the most popular/relevant protocols used by the base as a whole e.g. interactive activity such as browsing and mail, and it will always have priority access to the available capacity on the network. As the demand for priority traffic increases during peak times, non-priority traffic (e.g. torrents and news server content) receives a lower priority to ensure that the priority traffic/activities maintain a premium quality of service/experience.

So to answer your question, we have no intention of shaping bandwidth more than is necessary in peak network conditions, heavy download protocols such as torrents and news are not forbidden or specifically degraded, but when priority traffic demand increases it will be at the expense of non-priority traffic. The probability of this happening is at its greatest during peak times. During non-peak times, network capacity permitting, performance should be more than adequate on bandwidth intensive applications.

How fast are these services?

How fast do you want your access to be? Your line speed determines how fast you are able to transfer data. (I.e. how fast Web pages load or how fast files are downloaded). We have a range of line speed options from 384 Kbps up to 4 Mbps download. Your line speed controls how quickly data gets to your computer over the internet.

  • Fast (384Kbps): A good option for 1 or 2 users doing mostly web browsing and emailing.
  • Faster (512Kbps): Better suited for a family or small office better suited for larger file downloads as well as radio streaming and video calling.
  • Fastest (4096Kbps): This is the best option for someone who prefers high speed downloads and enjoys gaming and streaming.

What exactly will this cost me?

For data only (384kbps) you will pay R219 and for our all inclusive package R349 – this includes your line rental. This is a fixed monthly amount, in other words NO extra or hidden costs.

Do I need a landline?

Yes, you will need an existing (non pre-paid) telephone line to use this service.

Can I order my line from MWEB, or do I order it from Telkom and then transfer it over to MWEB?

You can order your line from MWEB and we will order the line from Telkom on your behalf. MWEB will manage the complete line order process and will bill you directly so would not be required to deal with Telkom.
