Holiday Tips
If you're going away over the Festive Season, here are some useful tips to ensure a hassle-free connection to the Internet and your e-mail when you return in the New Year.
Unplug your modem or router
Lightning and power surges can damage your modem or router. Unplugging the power and telephone line into your modem and/or router will ensure that these devices are safe from harm. Take note of how everything was plugged in to avoid any confusion when you return.
Enable Away Messaging
The MWEB Message Centre has an "Away Message" facility that enables you to set up your own automatic response to anyone who e-mails you during the time that you won't be accessing your mailbox. (Their messages will still arrive in your mailbox while you are away.) To set up your Away Message, simply click on E-mail Services in the Message Centre and then use the "Away Messaging" function.
Enable Forwarding
The Message Centre allows you to redirect your e-mail to an e-mail address that may be more accessible to you while you are away. Just remember to turn this option off on your return. To set up Forwarding, simply click on E-mail Services in the Message Centre and then use the "E-mail Forwarding" function.
Get your mail wherever you're going
Our Message Centre lets you view your e-mail from any PC in the world with an Internet connection. So, if you're going on holiday to a place where Internet access is available, you can use the Message Centre to send and receive your e-mails. On your return, you can also use it to "clean up" your mailbox (i.e. delete old or unwanted messages) before you download your e-mail onto your PC.
Use your Cellphone
You are also able to use mweb.mobi to access your email, news, my account and outage notifications from your cellphone.
Wireless Data
If you connect via 3G and are taking your device with you on holiday, please bear in mind that you may experience periods of congestion in coastal areas due to the load on the cellular network caused by holiday makers connecting to the internet.
Also remember that if you exceed your allocated usage, you can purchase boosters online via my account which now has an added security feature (OTP) for your protection.
Remember your password
It is advisable that you always write down your password and keep it in a safe place before going away for long periods of time, just as a safety precaution.
Update software
When you return, get the latest updates for all your critical software (e.g. anti-virus, anti-spyware and Windows software). Updating your Windows software is easy: connect to the Internet, open Internet Explorer, then select Tools and click on Windows Update. Anti-virus and anti-spyware software updating options may differ, so please consult your software vendor if you are uncertain about this.
