When Assassins Creed was first brought to us back in 2007, it set about bringing an unprecedented view of history steeped in secret societies and those that were birthed to shape it. The main premise of the series revolves around the Assassins and the Knights Templar, as well as a species predating humankind. The revelation of these species is only presented later on in the game played through the memories of the direct descendent of one of the most renowned Assassins Altair ibn-La'Ahad. Desmond, his descendent is placed within a memory machine called the Animus. The Animus is able to play out the memories of Desmond's predecessors, which takes us on the journey of discovery of the two societies waging a secret war upon each other, that directly impacts on the vast history in our modern world.
Through Desmond's eyes we play as Altair, Ezio Auditore de Firenze and finally as his native American forefather, Connor (ACIII). What set this game apart was its historical design of the 15th and 16th century renaissance architecture and landscapes. From the old world of Masyaf, Jerusalem and Damascus, to the glorious streets of Florence, Venice and the Vatican City, and finally to the early british settlers of the New American towns of Boston, New York and the great plains. Wherever your journey lead you, a great deal of emphasis and focus was placed on the design of the environments the Assassins would explore.
In Assassins Creed III (ACIII) we were introduced to the wild terrain surrounding Connor's tribal home, and get to experience the ability to hunt for food and animal hide. Whilst shooting wasn't new to the series, hunting in fact was. In ACIII we also took to the seas aboard a warship known as the Aquila, powered by its large sails, it was a mighty and imposing force with its large cannons and mounted guns. There are a number of strategic missions requiring you to perform ship-vs-ship combat, and sometimes having to take on an "Armada" of enemy ships. Each of the games within the series have brought fresh stories that all tie in to one overall conclusion. There is the impression we get that this world is widely open for exploration, and where most buildings can be scaled to view how vast these regions and towns are. If for anything at all, these games will make you feel in awe of how majestic the world's are, and how much time and detail was put in to make it as awe-inspiring as it has been.
The new game in the series is due for release on the 29 October 2013. Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag will follow the golden age of the villains of the seas, Pirates. The game begins in the year 1715, when pirates tormented and ruled the seas, pillaging and rampaging sea travellers and cargo ships alike. Whilst the protagonist from ACIII, Edward Kenway (Connor's father), is a part of the new story, there will undoubtedly be a new hero, and a new story to unfold. Whilst many reviewers have argued that the gameplay has been very much the same from game to game, there is no doubting the fact that each game has brought us new worlds, new stories and new adventures which have kept the series in the hearts of its ardent fans. One cannot deny how masterful the game has been and continues to be. I see no shift in the concept of bringing us to these fantastical worlds of great wonder, history, action and exploration. Assassins Creed: Black Flag will serve up a feast of greatness, dipped in the sweetness of its time period.
