Beyonce ruined her own videogame, got embroiled in a years-long lawsuit as a result and now we can all breathe a sigh of relief as we discover that finally it’s all been settled “amicably.”
The legal dispute all began in 2011, when Beyonce was sued by the studio for making an “extortionate demand” for more financial compensation during a “crucial moment” in the development of her dancing videogame, Starpower: Beyonce. Famous people have many bills to pay and it appears that Beyonce was feeling economic strain (or greediness) when she expressed this demand. The financier of the game’s development was a bit freaked out by this and pulled out of the project. Beyonce followed suit, thus violating her agreement with the company.
Gate Five then sued her for this, claiming that they were entitled to the $6.7 million dollars they had invested in the making of the game and for the $100 million profit they believe they would have made from its sale. They also sought an injunction that would prevent poor Beyonce from “commercially associating with any other videogame.”
Two years later, the case has been settled in Manhattan Supreme Court as lawyers acting for both parties filed papers dismissing all claims and counter-claims related to the suit. The pop star has paid developer Gate Five “an undisclosed amount” of cash money and Gate Five’s lawyer Peter Gallagher made the following statement:
We've settled amicably. I can't discuss the terms of the settlement, but it was resolved.
I want to make some sort of Beyonce-related pun to end off, but for the life of me I can’t think of the titles of any of her songs, so I’ll just acknowledge the fact that I’m sure we’ll all sleep easier knowing that crisis has been averted in a civilised manner.
