It's official. Need for Speed the movie is in production and is due for release in 2014. Aaron Paul (of Breaking Bad fame) will be starring along with Imogen Poots (V for Vendetta) and Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger). George and John Gatins will be on writing duty. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor fame) will be directing this film.
“The Need for Speed movie will embody everything that fans of action racing films want to see – hot cars, high stakes street racing and mind-blowing stunts,” said Scott Waugh, Director of Need for Speed the movie. “The adrenaline fueled story across America will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.”
The movie will be of similar nature to the next installment of the Need for Speed series titled Rivals. Rivals will be developed on the Frostbite 3 engine (an EA staple) and will feature a system called Alldrive where single player and multiplayer will merge into one seamless experience. According to the press release friends can join your racing world automatically. How this works not known as yet but this sounds similar to what is promised by watch_dogs. Rivals is a collaboration between Ghost Games and Criterion (Burnout).
What cars are we going to see? Well there is a custom Ford Mustang being driven by Aaron Paul which will feature both in-game and in the movie. Hypercar staples like the Pagani Huayra, Koenigsegg Agera R, Bugatti Veyron, Mclaren P1, Ferrari F12 and Lamborghini Sesto Elemento will also be available. With an exclusive selection of licensed hyper and super cars expect more big names to appear as more news arrives.
Need for Speed Rivals will be available on November 22, 2013 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, much earlier than the release of the movie itself. The film is pegged for release much later in 2014. The question remaining is this: Will the movie be another Fast and Furious clone or will we witness the birth of a successful new franchise?
