It only goes to show how disconnected publishers seem to be from their customer base when success stories like these crop up. Some time ago, I had written about
the Kickstarter initiative by Brian Fargo, also of Fallout, Wasteland and Bard's Tale fame, wanting to get a spiritual successor to his 1999 hit, Planescape: Torment going, called Torment: Tides of Numenera
It seems that that dream is now a definitive step closer to reality – The Kickstarter goal was reached in only 6 hours of going live
, and at this time of writing, is sitting at USD $1.6 million and climbing. Fargo updated his journal on Kickstarter with, “our heads are still spinning at the incredible response we have had from today's support of our Kickstarter campaign. We had plans to roll out our stretch goals and to write our Kickstarter updates but never in our wildest dreams did we think we would fund this quickly!!! We are joyfully scrambling right now to get a longer update and some stretch goals in front of you as soon as we can. We should have more to say later today."
So who says the classical RPG genre is dead, now?
Torment: Tides of Numenera is to be based on the Numenera science fantasy RPG system developed by Monte Cook, who also worked on the original Planescape: Torment game. The Numenera game system was also on and also successfully Kickstarted last year.
Thanks to Slashdot for the alert, and Kickstarter for the source!
