Is Assassin's Creed IV coming in 2014?

Few things are as regular as a person that habitually consumes Kellogg's High Fibre Bran, but I would think annualised video game franchises are a close second. With that in mind, I'm sure no will be surprised that a new Assassin's Creed game is in the works. What is surprising is that it's not planned for 2013 and will feature a new hero and setting as revealed by Ubisoft chief executive officer Yves Guillemot  in a conference call with company investors.

“We are delighted and proud to announce today that in [fiscal 2014], we will introduce an all-new Assassin’s Creed hero,” said Guillemot. “With an all new team and time period. We expect it to be another major leap forward for the franchise. [This] is the benefit of multiple teams working on multiple chapters of the project, each [gets] several years to make their versions of an Assassin’s Creed game.”

Last year Ubisoft dropped Assassin’s Creed III for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC, which featured the debut of the third primary Assassin's Creed protagonist, the half-Native American Connor Kenway, with all the action happening during the American Revolutionary War. This new game flies in the face of the franchises typical modus operandi of releasing annual spin-off games with the same assassin as the numbered sequels.

It's not impossible though, that this new game is a spin-off in the vein of Assassin's Creed: Liberation, which was released on the PS VIta, since Guillemot didn't reveal any specifics saying the publisher would announce more details about the game at a later date.

If the next Assassin’s Creed does release in 2014, as planned, it can expected that it will be next-gen title for Sony and Microsoft's upcoming console.

If you have the patience and are will to create an account you can listen to the whole conference call here.
