I am of course referring to the legend that is Gabe Newell. He gave an hour long talk at the University of Texas, Austin where he reflects back on the choices he’s made over the years that led to Valve being what it is today.
Newell jumps into some of the questions the Internet has been brooding over for years regarding Valve. Founded in 1996, this privately owned Super Corporation, which regards people as the most valuable part of the value chain and, yields a 50% growth rate per year in profit. What is in the fibre of Valve as a company that naturally enables its employees to tap into their personal creativity resulting in a synergy that delivers productivity on an unprecedented level?
One of the products that resulted from the symbiosis between Company and Staff is Steam; an internet services platform that has 55 million users and 2500 different applications, with no end in sight to its growth. It’s like whatever is birthed from Valve keeps on birthing, the growth potential is endless and seamless.

- Talent is the highest commodity
- Having a meeting to determine the validity of an idea is pointless
- Titles are obsolete
- Management is a skill, not a career path
- Corporate flexibility to optimize productivity takes priority over set structuring
- Users are the source for market direction
