We’ve all played or at least heard of previous Bioware titles including some sort of romantic in-character relations. More than likely, you’d would remember the stink brought up by Fox News regarding “digital nudity”
in the first Mass Effect some years ago.
Bioware’s Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age series went even further by allowing Same Gender Relationships or SGR for short. You could play Mass Effects’ Shepard protagonist as either male or female, while pursuing an in-game relationship with an NPC as either heterosexual or homosexual, relative to your character’s gender. It’s all about choices.
Bioware seemed to be taken a bit of flak from its gaming community regarding the apparent lack of SGR content in Star Wars: The Old Republic, but there is hope – In a State of the Game update
post at the beginning of the year, SWTOR’s executive producer Jeff Hickman has stated that SGR content will be included in the upcoming paid-for expansion, Rise of the Hutt Cartel
. Players would be able to experience the new content featuring NPC SGR, but only on the planet of Makeb, featured in the expansion.
From Hickman’s post, “I realize that we promised SGR to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character. Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realized at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game Free-to-Play. As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of.”
A threadnaught has cropped up on the SWTOR forums regarding the inclusion of the content only on this planet in the expansion, but sources have indicated that retrofitting the game to include this content elsewhere would prove too big a technical and logistical hurdle to overcome.
I was wondering what Fox News would have to say on the subject if they found out about it… oh wait, they did…
From a personal standpoint, I like the fact that the choices of romantic interests can be pursued at all in games of this nature, it is after all, a Role-Playing Game by nature, that’s what you do – you know - role-play…
Thanks to Ars Technica for the alert, and Massively, SWTOR for sources!
